Died: 11 May 1622 / 1630
Notes: in 1622, as a widow and with a great deal of knowledge of her subject, Elizabeth published a tract on breastfeeding called “The Countesse of Lincolnes Nurserie”. She dedicated it to Theophilus’s wife. All was not well between them, however. In 1625 Theophilus brought suit against his mother in chancery, attempting to take away from her the guardianship of his three younger brothers.

Born: 1564, Charlton, Wiltshire, England Died: 8 Sep 1626/1633/1638 Notes: rumored to have been Robert Cecil’s mistress, but there seems little foundation for the story. Not sure if she married Hon. Richard Rich or his father, Robert Rich, 2° B. Rich of Leez. She had smallpox in 1619 "which spoiled that good face of hers, which had brought to other much misery and to herself greatness which ended with much unhappiness". When their daughter Frances was tried for the murder of Thomas Overbury, Thomas Howard, Earl of Sufolk, and his Countess, were also brought before the Star Chamber. II. BERNERS LINE
Edmund KNYVETT (1° B. Berners)
Born: ABT 1473/1486/1490, Buckenham, Norfolk, England
Died: 1 May 1539/40
Buried: Ashwellthorpe, Norfolk, England
Notes: Brother Thomas Knyvett. Sergeant Porter to Henry VIII. He acquired Ashwellthorpe through his marriage to Jane Bourchier, heiress of John Bourchier. Edmund's will, dated 24 Jun 1546, and probated the same year, mentioned his wife, Jane, and his children, but not by name. The will of Jane Knyvett, widow, daughter and sole heir of John Bourchier, Knight, late Lord Berners, deceased, was dated 8 Apr 1560, and probated Dec 1562. It included a record of an earlier legal document that mentioned her sons, William and Edmund Knyvett, as well as her son, John Knyvett, her heir apparent. Mentioned in the will were her sons, William and Edmund, her daughters and sons-in-law, Alice and Oliver Sheers, Rose Reymes, widow, and Christian and Thomas Foster, and her "cousin", Thomas Knyvett, her heir apparent (presumably her grandson, the oldest son of her son, John). Also mentioned were her "goddaughters", Jane Walpole, Mary Walpole, and Bridget Walpole, all unmarried, "the same Agnes" (unmarried and unidentified), Bridget (the daughter of Edmund Knyvett) who was unmarried, and Henry (the son of Thomas Knyvett) who was under 21. One of the executors was her son, William Knyvett. The "goddaughters" must be "granddaughters", since the will of William Walpole, son of Catherine and John Walpole, dated 5 Aug 1587, and proved 5 Dec 1587, in the PCC, mentioned his mother, Catherine, now married to Thomas Scarlett, and his sisters, Mary Houghton, Jane Ryvett, and Bridget Houghell (amongst others) |

Notes: While Sir William Clopton was off to do battle with one Lambert Simnel, his wife, Thomasine, added to her duties of maintaining the household and bearing children, the responsibility of guarding her husband's properties. Warfare defined the world of the Clopton and women from the ninth to the seventeenth century. A knight's lady acted on their behalf in their absence during war. The wives and daughters exercised authority, defended the family's lands and title. While women received no formal education, surviving documents show they could read and write. Noblewomen left records of their household accounts, instruction to administrators of the family's holdings, and letters to their husbands to keep them abreast of decisions made while they were at battle. Like the other women of the castles and manors, Lady Thomasine would be expected to serve food and drink to the warrior bands and tend the injured and sick.
