Eleanor CAREY (Nun at Wilton Abbey)
Born: ABT 1496, Clovelly, Devonshire, England
Died: AFT 1528
Notes: was a nun at Wilton Abbey, a large Benedictine nunnery located some seventy miles from London. When the abbess, Cecily Willoughby, died on 24 Apr 1528, the prioress, Isabel Jordan or Jordayn, whose sister Agnes was the abbess at Syon, was the natural successor. She was "ancient, wise, and discreet". But Eleanor Carey's name was also proposed, and Eleanor had the backing of Anne Boleyn. Cardinal Wolsey, supporting Isabel Jordan, ordered that Eleanor’s background be thoroughly investigated. It soon came out that Eleanor had borne two children out of wedlock to two different priests and had more recently been involved with a servant in Lord Willoughby de Broke's household. Eleanor's eldest sister, also a nun at Wilton, was then proposed as a compromise candidate. This may have been Anne Carey. In Jul, the King decided that none of them should have the post, but Wolsey went ahead with Dame Isabel’s appointment anyway, precipitating the first violent disagreement between King and Cardinal. What happened to Eleanor Carey after that is unknown.

Born: ABT 1576, Aldenham, Hertfordshire, England Acceded: 14 Nov 1620 Buried: 25 Sep 1633, Aldenham, Hertfordshire, England Notes: Lord Caye, Member of Parliament. The Complete Peerage vol.V,pp.239-240. A coloniser and military officer. He was born in England and educated at Exeter College, Oxford. He served in France and the Low Countries, and was taken prisoner by Don Luis de Velasco, probably at the siege of Ostend. On his return to England Cary was introduced to court, and became Gentleman of the Bedchamber. He was knighted at Dublin in 1599. In 1601 he was elected Member of Parliamentfor Hertfordshire. He was a J.P. for Hertfordshire in 1601. He became joint master of the jewels with his father on 21 Jun 1603. In 1604 he was re-elected MP for Hertfordshire. In 1611 he became a supporter of the Northwest Passage Company and was knighted in 1616. Carey was created first Viscount Falkland and Lord Deputy of Ireland in 1620. In that year he proposed a colony in Newfoundland for settlement by Irish colonists. Carey was linked to the London and Bristol Company which had initiated colonisation of Newfoundland through his wife who was the daughter of Sir Laurence Tanfield, one of the leaders of the Company. In 1620 the company granted him a large tract of land in the Bonavista Peninsula which became known as North Falkland. Soon after William Vaughan sold part of his land to Carey. In 1623, Carey appointed Sir Francis Tanfield, his wife's cousin, to be the colony's first Proprietary Governor. Tanfield established the colony of South Falkland in 1623. It was still in existence by 1626 but ultimately failed and Carey granted much of his land to Sir Henry Salisbury who had been Carey's only known investor. Carey married in 1602 Elizabeth Tanfield, daughter and heiress of Sir Lawrence Tanfield, lord chief baron of the exchequer, and his wife Elizabeth Symonds, daughter of Giles Symondes of Claye, Norfolk. She was aged fifteen at the time of the marriage and had a high reputation for her learning. In very early years she showed a strong inclination for the study of languages, mastering French, Spanish, Italian, Latin, Hebrew, and Transylvanian. As the result of her study of the fathers, she was converted to the Catholic faith, when about nineteen years of age. Elizabeth accompanied her husband to Dublin, where she took a great interest in the establishment of industrial schools. When Carey learned of her change of faith they quarreled, and she left Dublin in 1625. The Privy Council allowed her a separate maintenance of £500 a year. Carey served as Lord Deputy of Ireland until 1629 when he returned to England. After Carey's return to England, he and Elizabeth became reconciled, but continued to live separately. On account of her change of faith her father probably passed her over in his will. Carey died from a leg amputation in 1633. When her husband died Elizabeth had only the annuity of £200 a year given her by her parents. She died in Oct 1639. |

Notes: In 1642 Carey sold Aldenham House to Sir Job Harby, a staunch Royalist. The house later became the property of Denzil Holles in 1663. It was completely restored in the 19th century, but has many 16th and 17th century internal features. Lord Falkland has been described as both the most noble and most pathetic figure of the Civil Wars. Prior to the Wars he was a member for Newport, I.O.W. and was a moderate, but when war broke out his allegiances were clearly with the King. He has been described as an extremely intelligent and knowledgeable man, a philosopher and poet, noble and gallant. However it is well documented that by his own word he was sickened by the plight of the age and developed a melancholy that degenerated into a morbid death wish, seeing no end to the war. When he charged headlong to his death at the first battle of Newbury in Sep 1643, he committed a gallant suicide and met the death for which he had longed. He charged his mount through a heavily guarded gap in a hedgerow and Parliamentarian musketeers easily picked him off. He was shot through the neck, stripped naked and was identified after the day-long battle by a mole on his neck. His body was returned home and later interred at Great Tew church. There now stands a memorial to Lord Falkland at the Newbury battle site.

Catherine CAREY (Chief Lady of Bedchamber)
Born: 1524/9
Died: 15 Jan 1568/9, Hampton Court Palace
Buried: Apr 1569, Westminster Abbey, London, Middlesex, England
Notes: Said to be daughter of Henry VIII. There is several evidence that King Henry dealt with the welfare of Catherine Carey. Around Nov 1539, at the age of 15 and despite the fall of Boleyn's favor in 1536, Catherine was named the maid of honor of Anne of Cleves in Jan of 1540. She married Sir Francis Knollys on Apr 26 of that same year. With his marriage to Catherine Carey in 1540, Francis Knollys was created Gentleman Pensioner, his first royal appointment. Also upon their marriage, there was assurance of "the manor of Rotherfield Grey, Oxon, to Fras. Knolles, Esq., and Katharine his wife" by Act of Parliament in Apr/May 1540. Catherine was in exile in Basel in Jun 1557, during the reign of Mary Tudor, and later was in Frankfurt. She probably left England in the spring of 1556, although her husband had left earlier. They had at least five of their children with them. Catherine was back in England by 14 Jan 1559. She and Anne Morgan, her brother Henry’s wife, became ladies of the privy chamber to Queen Elizabeth. Elizabeth never recognized Catherine as her half-sister, and it was certainly not a relationship that Catherine or Sir Francis ever openly claimed. At court, Catherine was acknowledged as the Queen's favourite among her first cousins, and Elizabeth's lack of other female relatives to whom she felt close may be adequate to explain this favoured position Catherine’s children were also at court. In 1560, she and her son Robert were granted Taunton Manor for life. She died at Hampton Court and the Queen paid for her funeral, which cost £640 2s.11d. The funeral was overseen by the Earl Marshal the Duke of Norfolk and the Lord Treasurer the Earl of Leicester. |

Catherine CAREY (C. Nottingham)
Born: AFT 1547 Died: 25 Feb 1602/3, Arundel House, London, Middlesex, England Notes: came to court in Jan 1560 as a gentlewoman of the privy chamber and quickly became one of Elizabeth Tudor’s favorites. In Jul 1563 she married Charles Howard, later E. of Nottingham. Their children were brought up at Reigate, but Catherine spent her time at court. She held various posts, including Mistress of Robes and Mistress of Jewels. She twice entertained Elizabeth at her husband’s house in King Street, Westminster, in 1585 and again in 1587. As a reward for her long service, she was granted the manor of Chelsea in 1591. According to legend, the Countess of Nottingham was responsible for the Earl of Essex’s execution in 1601. The story goes that Essex was supposed to have given a ring (a gift to him from the queen) to a messenger with directions to give it to Lady Scrope, Lady Nottingham’s sister, who sympathized with his situation. The messenger mistook the sisters and gave the ring to Lady Nottingham and, as she was not an Essex supporter, she kept it. On her deathbed she is said to have confessed her deception to the Queen, who cried out “God may forgive you, Madam, but I never can!”. The problem with this story is that Lady Nottingham was not at court in 1601. She fell ill in Jan of that year and her health continued to decline until her death at Arundel House two years later. Her passing so demoralized the queen that Elizabeth lost her own will to live. Catherine was buried at Chelsea three days before Queen Elizabeth was interred in Westminster Abbey. Notes: said to have been a maid of honor before she married Edward Hoby on 21 May 1582. He was knighted the next day. They had no children and did not get along. When in London, Lady Hoby lived in rooms in Somerset House rather than with her husband in his house in Canon Row. In 1592, she helped her mother-in-law, Lady Russell, entertain the Queen at Bisham. Margaret suffered from gout and journeyed to Bath in Apr 1600 with her brother, Lord Hunsdon and his wife to take the waters there. The following year she was a patient of Dr. Simon Forman. Her monument is in Bisham Church.

Notes: a patron of the arts; Thomas Nashe dedicated his Terrors of the Night to her in 1594 and Peter Erondell probably used her as his model for Lady Ri-mellaine in his manual on proper behavior, The French Garden (1605). Erondell had been his French tutor. On 19 Feb 1595, Elizabeth married Sir Thomas Berkeley. Elizabeth paid off her husband's debts. In Feb 1622 she took Sir Thomas Chamberlain, a justice of the King’s Bench, as her second husband. He provided generously for her and left her son £10,000.
