Notes: Other pedigrees (from unreliable sources) centre on Theobald Russell (d. 1340) of Yaverland in Isle of Wight, Kingston Russell in Dorset, and Horsington in Somerset.
One reference states that the grandfather of this Theobald was a common ancestor of the Earls and the Dukes of Bedford. Other references state that the Earls of Bedford descended from a son of Theobald's second marriage. Most of these references 'appear to agree' on Theobald's ancestry.
Theobald Russell, he is said to have married twice. First wife was Eleanor Gorges, daughter and heiress of Sir Ralph De Gorges. By Eleanor he had three sons, his heir Ralph, William (died sp) and Theobald who assumed the name of Gorges after inheriting from his mother. Theobald's second wife is said to be Eleanor De la Tour, daughter of John De la Tour, by whom he had a son William. William Russell, son of Theobald and Eleanor, married the daughter and heiress of Muschamp. They had a son Henry Russell who married the daughter and co-heir of John Herring. Henry had a son James Russell who was the father of John Russell, 1st Earl of Bedford. (There is no mention of Stephen Russell, apparently a proven ancestor, or of his wife Alice, also a proven ancestor.)
Bearing in mind that Stephen Russell was Member of Parliament for Weymouth in 1394/5, also was a Thomas Russell who was Member of Parliament for adjacent Melcombe in 1384/5 and 1389/90, and a William Russell who was Member of Parliament for Melcombe in 1340/1 and taxed at the same place in 1367/8.

Poet Pietro Bozzari wrote of her that she had "a form like Helen's, by delight attended". Remained at court as a lady of the privy chamber after her marriage with Ambrose Dudley. She became extremely influential and was once said to have refused a bribe of £100 to advance a suit in chancery because the sum was too small. In addition to her lodgings at court, Anne kept a house in what had once been the garden of the priory of the Austin Friars in Broad Street, London. She was also lady of the manor of Rowington, Warwickshire and it was to her that William Shakespeare had to apply for the copyhold on his cottage and grounds in Stratford-upon-Avon. She had no children of her own, but she was guardian to her nephew, the 3rd E. of Bedford, and took an interest in the upbringing of three of her nieces, Anne and Elizabeth Russell and Anne Clifford. Anne Russell was with Queen Elizabeth when the Queen died. Father: Francis RUSSELL (2° E. Bedford) Mother: Margaret St. JOHN (C. Bedford) Married: Ambrose DUDLEY (3° E. Notes: summ. to Lords in his fa.'s barony as Lord Russell Jan 1581. Russell married a sister-in-law of Lord Burghley, and the Queen Elizabeth and the Earl of Leicester were godparents to the daughter born in 1575. Both Russell's seats in Parliament were obtained through the influence of his father. On the second occasion some doubt arose as to whether he could continue in his seat after the death of his elder brother entitled him to a courtesy title, and his membership of the Commons was confirmed 9 Feb 1576. He was appointed to committees concerned with ports (13 Feb), wines (21 Feb), church discipline (29 Feb) and the petition urging the Queen to marry (12 Mar). Later that year he travelled in Germany and Italy. He was raised to the peerage before the next and last session of the Parliament. Russell died v.p. at Highgate in Jul 1584. Administration was granted to his widow on 9 Oct 1584: a further grant was made, 22 Oct 1618, to their daughter Anne, Lady Herbert.

Died: Jun 1600
Buried: St. Edmund´s Chapel, Westminster Abbey, London, Middlesex, England
Notes: She is said to have been born within the precincts of Westminster Abbey, where the Dean had given her mother permission to take refuge from an outbreak of the plague. Queen Elizabeth was her godmother. At nineteen, she went to court as a Maid of honour to Queen. She and her sister Anne sold their inheritance, Russell House in St. Martin-in-the-fields, provoking a quarrel with their mother. Elizabeth further irritated Lady Russell by being thrown out of the Coffer Chamber in Apr 1597, in company with Elizabeth Brydges, for going unchaperoned to watch the Earl of Essex and other gentlemen play at ballon. One rumor makes Elizabeth Russell the Earl’s mistress. She certainly had admirers, Lord Cobham and Lord Admiral Charles Howard among them. Although the Lord Admiral was already married, Lady Russell urged her daughter to use her influence with him. Lady Russell wanted him to grant her the lease to Donnington. At one point in the 1590s, negotiations were ongoing for Elizabeth Russell’s marriage to the Earl of Worcester’s heir, but that young man died and the next brother in line was betrothed to Elizabeth’s younger sister, Anne. Elizabeth danced at their wedding. Then, within a fortnight, she fell ill and died. There are various stories about her death. One says she died of consumption. Another blames her death on a prick from a needle and asserts that it was her punishment for working on a Sunday. However she died, she was buried in Westminster Abbey, where she is the subject of a most unusual sculpture. She is shown asleep sitting up, one foot resting on a skull. Father: John RUSSELL (4° B. He was born 1593, attended his father in Ireland, when a youth, was knighted 30 Mar 1607, and succeeded to his father's Peerage 9 Aug 1613. In 1630 he undertook the great work of draining the fens in the counties of Northampton, Cambridge, Huntingdon, Norfolk and Lincoln, called from him "the Bedford level". He is said to have been Grand Master of Freemasons 1635-36. Though of the popular party, his moderation was such that he had undertaken to preserve Lord Stafford's life. He wsa one of the 16 'popular' noblemen, named by the King, Sep 1640, to treat with the Scots at Ripon. P.C. 19 Feb 1641; the King also had resolved to make him Lord High Treasurer, but his premature death prevented the accomplishment thereof. He married (settlement dat. 22 Feb.) 26 Feb 1608/9, at St. Mary le Strand, Catherine, daughter and coheir of Giles Brydges, 3rd Baron Chandos of Sudeley, by Frances, daughter of Edward Clinton, Earl of Lincoln. He died 9 May 1641, of the small pox, and was buried at Chenies, aged about 48. Will dated 14 Oct 1639, pr. 8 Feb 1642. His widow died 29 Jan, and was buried 16 Feb 1656/7, with him. M.I.".
