Like his father and grandfather, he became the King's serjeant at arms in 1390 during the reign of Richard II. He was judge of the Common Pleas, from 1396 to 1408. In 1399 he was a member of the commission which engineered the deposing of Richard II (he wrote the legal document) and received Richard's renunciation of the crown in favor of Henry of Bolingbroke (Henry IV). His first wife was Elizabeth Cressy, daughter of Sir John, and sister and coheir of Sir Hugh Cressy. Elizabeth died in 1408. She inherited Cressi Hall, Risegate, Braytoft, and Exton in Lincolnshire, and they passed to the Markhams on her death. They had a son Robert, who married (before his father's death), Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Nicholas Burdon (MP) (d. 1403 in the Battle of Shrewsbury) and Millicent Bekeryng. Elizabeth, as sole heir, inherited Burdon's extensive holdings, except for the 1/3 held in dower by Bourdon's widow. Apparently in an attempt to gain possession of the entire inheritance, John Markham married Millicent Bekeryng. They had issue, and after his death, Millicent married William Meringe.

Notes: Matric. 1584. Adm. at Gray's Inn, 27-04-1586. English soldier, knighted in 1594 after serving under the Earl of Essex. Served abroad under Sir Francis Vere at the siege of Rouen. During the Nine Years War he commanded the cavalry under Sir Conyers Clifford, and his opportune arrival and counter-charge after the defeat of the infantry at the Battle of Curlew Pass (1599) saved the army from complete disaster. His right arm was broken during the affray. Markham was banished from court for unknown reasons around 1593. He later took part in the Bye Plot and subsequently the Main Plot. Was convicted of high treason for his part in the conspiracy to have Arabella Stuart ascend to the throne. He was arrested at the same time as Sir Walter Raleigh and Watson, a priest. The warrant for his arrest described him as "a man with a large broad face, of a bleak complexion, a big nose, and one of his hands maimed by a shot of a bullet". His wife, Lady Anne, corresponded with Robert Cecil, offering to deliver the Jesuit Father Gerard, to him, if her husband was restored and pardoned. However, he was pardoned from execution on the scaffold at Winchester 9 Dec 1603, and exiled (1605). His properties were given to his cousin, Sir John Harington. He spent the rest of his life in exile in Europe, acting as a spy for Robert Cecil. He joined the English regiment in the Low Countries; there he fell out with Sir Edmund Baynham, a conspirator in the Gunpowder Plot, and fought a bloody duel with him.He was then a Roman Catholic, in Vienna, in 1645. He writes as a strong royalist: "Oh that I could come to serve that good king... but my hurts and old age do hinder me from that honour".
He had married Anne, dau. of Peter Roos of Laxton, Esq. Cecil had been informed that Lady Markham was 'the most pragmatical headed lady in these parts of England'. On 8 Sep of 1603 she petitioned the King that her husband might be allowed to come home upon legal business. Finally this lady got into serious trouble. In Nov 1618 she did penance in a white sheet at St. Paul's Cross, for marrying one of her servants, named James Sanford, her husband being still alive. She was to do the same elsewhere, and was fined £1000.Settlement made subsequent to the marriage of Sir Griffin Markham and Anne Roos. Notes: third son, was born in 1568, named after his godfather, Sir Gervase Clifton of Clifton. He early showed an inclination for literary pursuits, and he began to cultivate a taste for poetry in early youth, though he also did good service as a soldier, and carefully studied the art of war. Above all he was devoted to the sports of the field, to horsemanship, gardening, and farming. We first meet with Gervase as a defender of his father and himself against the insolent attack of 'Black Markham' of Ollerton.
Gervase served in the Low Countries under Sir Francis Vere, and in Ireland under the Earl of Essex. He is, however, better known as a prolific writer, and as a very popular one.
In 1595, Gervase published 'The Poem of Poems, or Sion's Muse, containing the divine song of King Solomon in eight eclogues'. It was reprinted in the following year, and dedicated to Elizabeth Sidney, sole daughter of Sir Phillip Sidney.
The same year Gervase published his elegy on Sir Richard Grenville and the glorious fight of the Revenge. It is entitled 'The most honorable Tragedie of Sir Richard Grenville Knight, dedicated to Lord Mountjoy'. Gervase translated into verse, from the Italian, a work which is also now of extreme rarity. It is entitled 'The Famous Whore or Noble Courtezan, containing the lamentable complaint of Paulina, the famous Roman Courtezan, sometime Mistresse unto the Cardinal Hippolito of Este'. It was published in 1609.
His fame as an author is, however, chiefly due to his prose works. His first prose work was printed at London in 1593, when his age was twenty-five, with the title 'A discourse on Horsemanshippe, wherein the breedinge and ridinge of horses for service in a brief manner is more methodically sette downe than hathe been heretofore'. Another work on the same subject is dedicated to his father.
Gervase was an inveterate sportsman. He introduced several Arabian horses.

Notes: a gallant soldier, but little is known of him. Godfrey served under the Earl of Essex in Ireland when quite young. There is then an interval of forty years during which we hear nothing of him. When the civil war broke out, Godfrey had reached the advanced age of sixty-seven. He, however, joined the standard of Charles I, and fought with distinction in the royalist army. He was in garrison at Newark, and in the early part of the year 1644 he was slain. In a sortie commanded by Sir Marmaduke Langdale, the royalists were met by Colonel Rossiter at Melton, and there was a sharp encounter with loss on both sides. Colonel Tuke, Major Kettington, and Captain Markham, with about a hundred others, fell. Godfrey was never married. He long survived all his brothers, and at last met a glorious death.
