Notes: After Lord Cromwell died childless on 4 Jan 1455/6, Joan and her elder sister Maud became his coheirs. By 14 Feb 1455/6 Joan had married Sir Humphrey Bourchier, the third son of Henry Bourchier, Earl of Essex. Humphrey, a cousin of Edward IV, was created Lord Bourchier in 1461 and died fighting on the Yorkist side at Barnet on 14 Apr 1471.
The brasses of Ralph, Lord Cromwell and his wife Margaret (now sadly mutilated) and Maud, Lady Willoughby, also at Tattershall, datable to the 1470s, and possibly laid down about the time of the completion of the chancel of Tattershall in 1475-6. Several related brasses commemorate members of the Bourchier family: Joan’s mother and father-in-law, the Earl and Countess of Essex, at Little Easton, Essex, her husband Humphrey, in Westminster Abbey (now mostly lost), and Sir John Say at Broxbourne, Herts., who was linked to the Bourchiers by service and his son’s marriage. After Humphrey Bourchier’s death she married Sir Robert Radclyffe of Hunstanton, Norfolk, who at some point before his death, which occurred between 24 Nov 1496 and 19 May 1498, ensured that she was no less nobly entombed than her sister.

Edward STANHOPE of Grimston (Sir)
Born: 1579
Died: 1646
Notes: owed his return for Scarborough to his father, who was elected for the county in the same year. It is not, however, clear through which of three possible patrons this influence was exercised. Either the Eures or Sir Thomas Posthumous Hoby, contestants for patronage in the borough, might have assisted Stanhope’s election. The Stanhopes were related to Hoby, and Sir Edward had supported him in the county election campaign in 1597. On the other hand, he had worked closely and amicably with Lord Eure on the council in the north and on border affairs. A third possibility is the Earl of Nottingham, high steward of Scarborough. Stanhope inherited considerable landed property from his father and made a good marriage. He was living at Edlington, near Doncaster, in the house his father had built, when he gave a silver cup to Doncaster to be competed for in horse races on the moor. But he gradually disposed of his estates, until he was left with property worth only £194 a year. He took little part in county administration, except for his one term as sheriff. He signed the 1640 petition of the Yorkshire gentry against the billeting of soldiers, and was buried at Kirkby Wharfe on 3 Oct 1646, being succeeded by his eldest son Edward.
