Notes: born Henry Williams but later took his mother’s maiden name, Cromwell, in order to inherit. His mother was the daughter of the Lord Mayor of London. Known as the Golden Knight. He inherited wealth, but due to carrying out extensive building projects, e.g. a summer retreat at Ramsey, and a remodelling of Hinchingbrooke House, combined with the cost of his lavish entertaining, all bringing work and wealth to the neighbourhood, earned him his nick-name, but also depleted the family coffers. He served as Sheriff of Huntingdonshire four times, and represented the county in parliament on one occasion, but was not considered a figure of national importance at the time, although well thought of by the locals. He bestowed upon his second son Robert (Oliver Cromwell’s father) a house in Huntingdon known as the Friars, formerly the site of an Augustinian Priory. In 1590, Susan Weeks, Lady Cromwell, visited the Throckmortons of Warboys and had an exchange of words with Alice Samuel in which Alice uttered the fatal words “I never did you any harm as yet”. Soon after, Lady Cromwell fell ill and died.

One suitor she rejected for a niece was Roger Williams, who went on to found Providence, Rhode Island. Born: ABT 1560, Hinchnbrooke, Huntingdon, England
Died: ABT 1617, Huntingdon, England
Notes: Elizabeth Stewart appears to have been the second child by this name, and baptized at Holy Trinity, Ely, 28th Oct. 1565. She married there 10 Feb. 1588-9, William Lynne, gent., who was buried there 26 Jul following, and their only child, Catherine, was also buried there 17 Mar 1589/90. She married secondly about a year after her first husband's death, Robert Cromwell of Huntingdon, Esq., by whom she was the mother of the Protector, and who was buried at All Saints, Huntingdon, 24 Jun 1617. If the above dates are correct, she had just entered her ninetieth year. She died 18 Nov. 1654, and was buried in great state, contrary to her express wishes.
In 1661, King Charles II ordered several bodies to be exhumed at Henry VII and other Chapels, to be buried outside the gates. These remains included Elizabeth Cromwell. BEF the disinterment of her remains, however, the body of her son, Oliver Cromwell, buried 26 Sept. 1658, had been exhumed and hung for public veiwing at Tyburn. (Payne family notes)

Oliver CROMWELL (Lord Protector)
Born: 25 Apr 1599, St. John's Parish, Huntingdon, England
Died: 3 Sep 1658, Whitall, Kent, England
Notes: His contacts with the Bourchier family put him in contact with London merchants and Puritan peers with interests in the American colonies. One of which was the Rich, Earl of Warwick.
Cromwell was Member of Parliament for Huntingdon, as was Sir Robert Payne during the same period and for Cambridge in the Long Parliament of 1640.
Oliver knew the younger Montagus (Edward and Walter) very well. Edward and Walter Montagu had been his exact contemporaries at Sidney Sussex and they had shared both revels and studies. (the King and the Gentleman)
During the Civil War Cromwell spent most of his time in the field but he managed to be present at Paliament and where he violently criticized the Bishops and and the Generals, including his own commanding officer, Edward Montagu, Earl of Manchester. The Montagu's were also high ranked officials of the Admiralty of which Pepys was a member.

Oliver,
Lord Protector. Oliver was most popular and beloved. He received vast wealth
from his uncle Richard Warren, but dissipated the money and sold his estates to
pay his debts. Oliver was a knight of the Bath. The King stayed many times at
his home in 1603, 05, 16, 17 and possibly many others on his way north to hunt.
Oliver was created Knight of the Bath. He was a member of the House of Commons,
Queen Anne's attorney in 1604. Oliver sold Hunchenbrook. He was a subscriber
toward Virginia.
He captured between three and four hundred Scottish prisoners, at the battles of
Dunbar and Worcester. These Cromwell transported to New England to be sold as
slaves. He had defeated the Royalists in England and beheaded the King in 1649.
Then he proceeded to the conquest of Ireland.
Did he have a son Thomas, who was related to Giles, perhaps a brother? Debug.
