Notes: was already married to John Denton or Dentonys, about whom nothing is known, when she entered the household of Henry VII’s children as mistress of the nursery to Prince Henry in 1496. Later she was Princess Mary’s governess. She may be the Mistress Denton who accompanied Princess Margaret to Scotland, returning when King James reduced the number of English attendants Margaret was allowed to keep with her. David Loades identifies her as the first Lady Mistress of the nursery of Henry VIII's daughter Mary. In May 1515, by then a widow, she was granted a annuity of £50 per annum "for service to the late King and Queen". By Nov 1517, Margaret Bryan was in charge of Mary Tudor's nursery. In 1518, Elizabeth Denton erected a tomb to herself. She lived in some comfort in the Blackfriars Precinct until her death. Philippa Jones’s The Other Tudors: Henry VIII’s Mistresses and Bastards makes the extraordinary claim that Elizabeth Denton was Henry’s first lover and even suggests that his grandmother, Margaret Beaufort, selected her for him.

Notes: was at court before May of 1511, when she received a half-year's wages (100s). She was listed as a chamberer on 9 Oct 1514, when King Henry VIII's sister, Mary Tudor, married King Louis XII of France. She was one of the few English attendants allowed to remain in France after the wedding. Sir Edward Grey, eldest son of Thomas Grey, first Marquis of Dorset, was also allowed to remain and they were married soon after, probably in France. As Lady Anne Grey, she remained in Mary Tudor's service, accompanying her back to England after Mary wed the Duke of Suffolk. Anne Jerningham carried the infant Henry Brandon at his christening. Widowed by the spring of 1517, Anne was in Norfolk, in the household of the Duke and Duchess of Suffolk, when Queen Catalina of Aragon paid a visit. Anne's stepmother, Mary Scrope, was one of the Queen's ladies. It is not clear when she married Henry Barley, but even if she had wed by 1520, she'd still have been listed as Lady Anne Grey at the Field of Cloth of Gold. At some point before 1531, Barley died and she married Sir Robert Drury of Hawstead. Her last husband, to whom she was wed by 1543, was Sir Edmund Walsingham of Scadbury, who was Lord Lieutenant of the Tower from 1521-1543. Anne was buried on 6 Apr 1559 beside her first husband in the church of St. Clement Danes, London.

Notes: because of their Catholic faith, their two young sons were taken from
them to be brought up as Protestants at Westminster. The plague
raging in London prompted Sir Henry to request that his sons be sent back
to Cotesby. Consent was given. (Vide
Historical Manuscripts Commission 10th report App. part IV.
H.M.S.O. 1885):
1593, The Privy Council to Henry Jerningham, Esq.:
"In answer to his suit that his two sons remaining with Mr. Molecaster
might, during the time of the infection be sent to remain with him for one
season, they had formerly permitted them to remain with him until
Allhallows' tide next, now, upon his renewed application that his said
children for some longer space of time may remain in the country with him
until infection be more slacked in the city they consent to his request
until Twelvetide next. They look that in the meantime his
children be brought up by a schoolmaster known to be well affected in
religion, that may give account for their education. Whitehall

Notes: suffered severly during the civil wars in the upsurpation, the Park at Costessey was let down and the deer destroyed, the mansion with the domain, let to a farmer, and a considerable part of the buildings was suffered to fall into decay. It is reported that Sir Henry who had been brought up in Westminster had often attended Protestant churches, lapsing from the Catholic faith. A report published in the 'Chronicle of St. Monica's Louvain' says that when he was near to his death a 'Father of the Society' was sent to him and he re-embraced the Catholic Faith. He was succeeded by his grandson.
