Died: 18 Mar 1487/8, Wetherdan, Suffolk, EnglandNotes: of Netherhall in Eye, Wetherden and Otes in High Laver (Essex). A Justice of the Court of King's Bench, is thought to have acquired the manor of Wetherden Hall (which had formerly belonged to Roger de Scales) in 1463 by fine, from Walter Bradley and his wife Joan: in 1468 he had a grant of free warren in it. His Hall, of which two truncated 15th century timber ranges survive in a much-remodelled farmhouse, stood at the moated site near to what is now Wetherden Hall Farm. It is observed that he was tutor to Prince Edward from 1473 until the boy's disappearance in 1483, and received the favour of Richard III, and that Wetherden was near to Gipping, seat of Sir James Tyrrell, who was apparently implicated in the prince's death.
The judge first married Agnes (daughter of Richard Hungate), by whom he had sons Edward and William, and daughter Elizabeth. Secondly he married Anne, daughter and coheir of John and Elizabeth Andrews of Baylham, Suffolk, and by her he had sons Andrew and John, and daughters Elizabeth, Anne and Alice, the uterine cousins of Andrew Windsor of Stanwell, Middlesex (whose father Thomas Wyndsore married their mother's sister Elizabeth Andrews).
At Sir John's death in Mar 1487/88, he founded the Sulyard chantry in the spectacular south aisle which he had commenced building at St Mary's Church, Wetherden. After 1488 Dame Anne remarried to Sir Thomas Bourchier of Knebworth, who died in 1491, and she survived until 1520. Dame Anne completed the south aisle with the porch, adding heraldry from her second marriage to Bourchier.
Wetherden Hall passed by remainder to Dame Anne Andrews, and from her to her son Andrew Sulyard.

Dorothy Barley, who had been abbess since l527, was forty nine years of age and twenty one years professed. Nearly half of her comnuninity must have been middle-aged women. Twelve of them, namely Thomasina Jenney, Margaret Scrope, Agnes Townshend, Dorothy Fitzlewis, Margery Ballard, Martha Fabyan, Ursula Wentworth, Joan Drury, Elizabeth Wyatt, Agnes Horsey, Susan Sulyard and Margaret Cotton, had taken part in her election. Of these, the first four were already professed, and the last a novice in 1499. Gabriel Shelton, Margery Paston and Elizabeth Badcoek were novices at the time of her election and were professed, together with Anne Snowe, Agnes Bucknam, Margaret Braunston, Elizabeth Bainbridge and Catherine Pollard in 1534. Notes: Nun at Syon Abbey. Her parentage has not been clarified, but Anne Andrews' link to the Windsor and Bourchier families, who also had members at the abbey, suggests that Bridget belonged to the Wetherden branch of the family of Sir John Sulyard. She was mentioned en the will of Abbess Agnes Jordan, so apparently Bridget lived with her at Denham, Buckinghamshire, after the dissolution.
