Notes: Nicholl, in his History
of Leicestershire, omits John, the first in the Burton pedigree, and
makes Thomas Blount of Burton, who married Agnes Kniveton, to be
the son of Peter Blount, the fourth son of Sir Walter Blount
and Sancha. This is merely conjecture, without the smallest foundation.
In a note Nicholl says, that "an illuminated roll of 1642, with notes
by" Blount, the Herefordshire Collector, brings the Blounts of Burton
from "the great Sir John Blount of Kinlet". The John Blount who
married Isabella Cornwall, and by her acquired the estate at Kinlet. His
son John Blount of Kinlet, who married Alice de la Bere, might be
the head of the Burton pedigree. But no Thomas is found amongst his sons,
who were Humphrey, John, Edmund, William, and
Charles, unless Thomas has been omitted.
Perhaps the son John may have been the person who married an Alice,
and was the ancestor of the Burton family. See:

6. Walter BLOUNT of Blount's Hall
Born: ABT 1527, Osbaston, Leicester, England
Notes: On one hand, Mary is called the daughter of Walter Blount and on the other hand it states that both Mary and Elizabeth were daughters of William Blount. I have seen sources list a daughter, Elizabeth, of William Blount, although she is said to have married Richard Saunders, another name associated with the Sydenham's.
In Chancery Depositions of 1599 "Walter Dennys of Clerkenwell, Middlesex, Esq., and Dame Mary his wieff late the wieff of Sir John Sydenham of Brympton, Somerset, Knt., deed... Whereas the said John Sydenham intended to take to wieff Dame Mary, one of the daughters of Walter Blount, Esq., decd.," etc. Lady Elizabeth Paulet, another daughter of William Blount, wife of Sir Hugh Paulet, and relict of Sir Thomas Pope, mentions in her will dated 16 Apr 1593, "my sister Lady Sydenham"
Father: Walter BLOUNT

Married 3: Hugh PAULET (Sir Knight) ABT 1559 / 12 Nov 1560
Died: 24 Apr 1594
Notes: Anne was left a bequest of 100 marks by her brother-in-law, Sir Thomas Pope, in 1559. According to the will of Richard Blount of Williton, Somersetshire and Coleman Street, London (d. 16 Nov 1575) written on 24 Dec 1575, Anne Blount, his cousin, was living in his house in London. He left her a pair of gold bracelets. “Anne Blunt of St. James Clerkenwell” made her will on 23 Apr 1594. It was proved 13 May 1594. In it she names her sister, Mary Blount, Lady Sydenham, to whom she left £20 and a “jewel with two agates and set about with pearl”, the children of another sister, Ellen (d.1577+), and her brother Walter. She was buried in Clerkenwell, where her date of death is, unaccountably, recorded as April
Father: Walter BLOUNT
Mother: Margaret (Mary) SUTTON
Died: AFT 1577
Notes: maid of honor to Princess Mary before 22 Feb 1545/6, when she married her first husband, William Goodwin of Bermondsey, Surrey, auditor to the queen. In 1568, her second husband John Felton is mentioned in records in connection with the sale of £265 worth of ingots for an alchemical fraud. He appears to have been quite wealthy, but he was also a radical in religion. On 25 May 1570, he nailed a copy of the papal bull excommunicating Queen Elizabeth to the door of St. Paul’s. He was arrested, charged with heresy and treason, and executed in St. Paul’s Churchyard on 8 Aug 1570, thus becoming a Roman Catholic martyr. Ellen’s daughter Frances, in 1627, claimed that after Felton’s death her mother found favor with Queen Elizabeth, having been her childhood playmate, and was granted permission to keep a priest in the house. This seems unlikely. Ellen’s third husband was John Strangman, another recusant. She brought £50 per annum, a relatively small sum, to the marriage. Her son Thomas, who later became a Franciscan friar, served as a page to a Catholic gentlewoman, Elizabeth Paris, Lady Lovell, when he was a boy. This same Lady Lovell helped arrange his release when he was imprisoned for his faith in the late 1580s. He was executed on 28 Aug 1588, following in his father’s footsteps to become a Catholic martyr. It is likely that his mother had died before then, although he still had several maternal aunts and a maternal uncle living. She was definitely deceased by 23 Apr 1594, when her sister Anne made her will.

Notes: may have followed his eldest brother John to court and was perhaps the sewer of the chamber of that name mentioned in 1509; he later became a servant of the 4th Earl of Shrewsbury. He settled at Eckington in north-east Derbyshire, five miles from Shrewsbury’s manor of Handsworth, presumably on land granted him by the earl, and he married into a Derbyshire family; but he retained his interest in Shropshire and in 1536, at Shrewsbury’s request, the abbot of Combermere leased him the parsonage of Childs Ercall, in the north of his native county.
Blount went on to serve Francis Talbot, 5th Earl of Shrewsbury, who succeeded to the title in 1538. During 1544 he accompanied Shrewsbury into Scotland and early in the following year he was sent by his master to conduct the Earl of Cassillis to court. In May 1547 Shrewsbury, hitherto preoccupied with his northern responsibilities, was appointed lord lieutenant of a block of counties which included Shropshire. This extension of the earl’s influence doubtless reinforced Blount’s claim to one of the Ludlow seats in the Parliament of 1547: his family was in any case an important one in the neighbourhood and Blount himself was to hold office under the council in the marches, although whether or not before his election is not clear. Nothing is known of his part in the proceedings of the Parliament and he was not to be returned again. During the first prorogation he captained a band against the Scots.
Of the remaining 25 years of Blount’s life nothing has come to light. By his will of 1 Oct 1576 he left £200 to each of his unmarried daughters and an annuity of 20 marks to his younger son; his remaining daughters appear to have married in the vicinity of his lands in north-east Derbyshire and at Handsworth near Sheffield. These lands Blount left to his wife and executrix during her lifetime with remainder to his heir George; there is no mention of property in Shropshire. Richard Vincent of Firsby in south Yorkshire was named supervisor of the will, which was proved in Apr 1581.

Notes: following his father’s death while he was still in his ’teens, William Blount entered the household of his nephew the Duke of Richmond. The prospect of advancement thus afforded was dispelled by Richmond’s death in Jul 1536 and there is no indication that Blount benefited from his mother’s earlier approach to Cromwell for the bestowal on him and his younger brother Henry of some of the monastic lands believed to be marked down for confiscation. Unlike this brother, Blount is not found in Cromwell’s service, but in 1540 he joined his elder brother George in the ranks of the gentlemen pensioners; his association with Sir Adrian Fortescue evidently did not compromise him when Fortescue was executed for treason in 1539.
Blount’s return for Wenlock to the Parliament of 1542 can be attributed to his family’s local ascendancy and in particular to his sister’s marriage to Richard Lacon of Willey, one of the most influential figures in the town. That his elder brother did not claim the seat, as he was to do later, may mean that George Blount was elected for the shire, the names of the knights on this occasion being lost; the Walter Blount who sat for Stafford was a remote kinsman. The Parliament ended in Mar 1544 and the following summer saw Blount take part in the campaign leading to the capture of Boulogne. Knighted there on 30 Sep, he was put in command of 400 pioneers engaged in defending Lower Boulogne against the French attempt to recover the town. As this is the last certain reference found to him he may have been killed in action. The captains named Blount who served later in France and Scotland did not, so far as their christian names are recorded, bear his own.

Notes: the Blounts of Iver and Mapledurham were a cadet branch of the Mountjoy family, Blount himself acting as executor to Charles, 5th Lord Mountjoy, in 1544. After coming of age he played a fairly active part in local affairs, though his career lay mainly in the royal household, where he had probably been serving for some years before his name is first recorded as a gentleman usher. He was in high favour in the last years of Henry VIII and under Edward VI and, after lying low in Mary’s reign, became Elizabeth’s lieutenant of the Tower.Blount’s main estates were in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, and his return as knight for the former county in 1563 reflects his local as well as his national position. He had a number of grants of local offices and lands in other parts of the kingdom, and his will, dated 23 May 1560, mentions lands in Buckinghamshire, Devon, Middlesex, Oxfordshire, Somerset and Sussex, purchased in the previous 20 years. Most of the lands descended to his elder son Michael, but he left Dedisham to his younger son Richard. He died on 11 Aug 1564 and was buried in the Tower. A memorial to him is in the chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula there. His will was proved 26 Aug by his widow.

Notes: Lieutenant of the Tower of London. "My well beloved son-in-law Michael Blunt esquire" is named as one of the executors of the Will of Dame Agnes Saunders, widow which was made on 27 Aug 1588. Probate was granted to Michael Blount, George Fermor and Ambrose Belson, the executors, on 9 Nov 1588.
In 1588 Sir Michael raised a loan of £1,500 for the purpose, it is believed, of building the present House, an altogether grander one which better expressed his status as a high official of Elizabeth I. It was completed by his son Sir Richard in 1612; he also increased his estate by buying, in 1582, the smaller Chazey manor from Anthony Brydges. He tried unsuccessfully to claim the extinct barony of Mountjoy on the death of the Earl of Devonshire. The House of Lords rejecting the claim for lack of evidence.

Richard BLOUNT of Mapledurham (Sir)
Born: 28 Jun 1564
Died: 11 May 1628
Notes: Perhaps because of his ambivalent religious position Blount, like his grandfather and father, took little part in public affairs and held no office outside the counties where his lands lay. In 1593 he was ordered to assist in dealing with certain recusants at Lady Montagu’s house, and five years later he is mentioned as refusing to contribute a horse for the army in Ireland; but these are the only two references found to his activities before 1601, the year in which he was returned to Parliament through the influence of his distant kinsman Henry, 5th Baron Windsor.
Blount himself was described as a non-communicant in 1612, but he presumably conformed before being appointed sheriff in 1625. The outright recusancy of his wife Cecily and of his eldest son, Sir Charles, must have strained his resources, but he left considerable estates at Bicester, Mapledurham and elsewhere, and made large bequests to his children, including £1,500 to his unmarried daughter. An elaborate priest hole dating from the sixteenth or early seventeenth century still exists at Mapledurham. Blount died 11 May 1628 and was buried in Mapledurham church, where a monument was erected.

Richard BLOUNT alias "Leigh"
Died: 17 Nov 1575
Notes: illegitimate sons of Sir John Leigh, son of Ralph Leigh and Joyce Culpeper, half brother of Queen Catherine Howard, by a mistress, possibly of Blount surname. Sir John was married to Elizabeth Darcy, sister of Thomas Darcy, Lord Chiche. Since in his will Richard describes the children of Walter Blount as his ‘cousins’, it seems likely that the testator was a descendant of John Blount (d. 1524) and Ellen Hall.
Since the testator’s sisters are identified in the will only by the surnames of their husbands, it is not known whether they were the testator’s sisters of the whole blood, or whether they were Sir John Leigh’s daughters by a different mistress or mistresses. Elizabeth, who married a husband surnamed Haffehede [=Halfhead?], by whom she had issue. The testator also mentions his niece, ‘Ursula Haffehede’, who ‘married Digbie’. This appears to be Ursula Halfehead of London, who married John Digby, son and heir of Henry Digby and Margaret, his wife. Agnes, who married a husband surnamed Milliton, by whom she had issue. Maud, who married a husband surnamed Seymour, by whom she had issue. Anne, who married a husband surnamed Robson, by whom she had a son, Thomas Robson.
In the will Richard mentions two brothers: Robert Blount, who married and had issue, including a son, Richard Blount, and another unnamed son, both of whom were under twenty-four years of age when the testator made his will; and Thomas Blount, who was a cleric.
Blount may have been in the service of the Paulets; he was an overseer of Sir Hugh’s will, and on his own death, 16 Nov 1575, he bequeathed a cross of gold with four diamonds and a ‘portique’ of gold to his ‘very good lady and friend’ (and possibly even relative, for she was née Blount) Lady Paulet, Sir Hugh’s wife, and instructed his widow, the sole executrix, to return ‘all such chests and goods which, of trust in the time of my lady her absence, remain in my home and were delivered unto me to be kept for her’. Another patron was Lady Sydenham, wife of Sir John Sydenham, to whom he bequeathed a ‘table diamond’. He provided for the maintenance of a poor scholar — to be nominated by the town of Stafford—at Oxford and left £100 to the fellows of Trinity College. The attorney-general Sir Gilbert Gerard, the solicitor-general Thomas Bromley and Lady Paulet were among the overseers of his will, which was proved 16 Dec 1575.
