Born: ABT 1560
Died: ABT 1625
Notes: From 1571, she and her siblings lived at Grace Dieu, Leicestershire with their maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Hastings. By a deed dated in Feb of that year, their father agreed to pay £10 a year for the upkeep of each of his daughters for a period of ten years. In about 1577, Eleanor married Edward Brooksby of Shoby, Leicestershire. They had two children, William and Mary; and Eleanor adopted a cousin, Frances Burroughs (b. 1576) shortly after her husband’s death. At that point she was living in the manor house of Great Ashby, part of her jointure. Her sister, Anne, lived with her. The third sister, Elizabeth, was smuggled out of England in 1582 and became a Poor Clare at Rouen. From 1586, Jesuit Henry Garnet was a regular member of Eleanor’s household, which by that time was situated in Warwickshire. After his arrest, Eleanor was in hiding. In 1625, Eleanor was convicted of recusancy at Leicester and fined £240, but she never paid the fine. She died later that same year.

Mother: Elizabeth BEAUMONT (B. Vaux of Harrowden)
Born: Jul 1562
Baptized: 19 Jul 1562, Irthlingborough, Northamptonshire
Died: ABT 1637
Notes: a dedicated recusant, Anne used the alias “Mrs. Perkins” to hire houses for use as meeting places for missionary priests. She also occasionally impersonated her sister Eleanor Brooksby, to confront the authorities. Anne was arrested when the Gunpowder Plot was uncovered but released soon after. At one point it was thought that she was the one who sent a letter to Lord Monteagle, warning him of the plot, but this is unlikely. She was arrested again the following Mar and this time confined in the Tower of London. She was released in Aug 1606. She and her sister, Eleanor lived quietly at Shoby, Leicestershire for some years but were arrested for recusancy in 1625. After her sister’s death, Anne moved to Stanley Grange, Derbyshire, which became a center of Jesuit activities in England and the site of a school for the sons of the Catholic gentry. Never married.

Buried: 14 Jul 1594, Great Harrowden, Northamptonshire, England
Notes: Educated at the English Coll., Douai (then at Rheims), BET 02 Nov 1582 and 1583. He married Elizabeth Roper, daughter of John Roper of Linsted, Kent (b. 1534 - d. 30 Aug 1618) and Elizabeth Parke (b. 1544 - d. 15 Sep 1567). It was a love match, and led to George being disinherited. The new heir was George’s younger brother, Ambrose, and Elizabeth completely bewitched Ambrose, who would do anything she demanded. Early in 1590, a reconciliation was achieved between George and his father and Ambrose surrendered his right to the forfeiture. The Vauxs were noted recusants, as was Elizabeth’s sister, Lady Lovell. After her husband’s death, Elizabeth founded what was essentially a Jesuit college at Harrowden—a place to educate Catholic boys before they were old enough to be smuggled out of England to attend Douai. For many years from 1598, Lady Vaux sheltered the Jesuit, John Gerard, at Harrowden, and was suspected of complicity in the Gunpowder Plot, Nov 1605. Six years later she was arested at Harrowden and sent to the Fleet prison, Nov 1611. After indicitment at the old Bailey for refusing to take the Oath of Allegiance, 19 Feb 1611/12, she was condemmed to perpetual imprisionment and on surety for the recovery of her health. This time she was held in Newgate. In Jul 1613 she was paroled for eight months to recover her health. There is no record that she went back to prison. In 1616, she left Harrowden for good, moving to Boughton, near Northampton. Then, in 1618 she was ordered to appear before the Privy Council but she was living at Broughton Nov 1625. Date and place of death not known.

Notes: Patron of Shakespeare. Became a ward of the Queen (and was suspected with his mother of being implicated in the Gunpowder Plot 1605). Under Lic. he travelled abroad with Sir Oliver Manners in Italy 1609-11. For refusing to take the Oath of Allegiance he was committed to the Fleet prison and was sentanced in the Kings Bench to perpetual imprisionment and loss of property. 01 Mar 1611/12. Transferred to the costody of the Dean of Westminster, had a grant of his forfeited lands. Oct 1612. Was released on surety of £1000, and on 5th Nov 1614 of £500. 22 Apr 1613. Summoned to Parliament, 03 Jan 1620/21. Colonel in an English regt. in the Spanish service in Flanders 1622. For resisting the Dep. Lieuts. of Northamptonshire, he was with his brother William again committed to the Fleet prison. He paid £300 to purge his personal attendance on the King at York, Mar 1638/39. His estate sequestered by Parliament for his recusancy. 1624/25. When Edward was seventeen, his mother sought to arrange his marriage to Elizabeth Howard, daughter of Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk, but the marriage negotiations were abandoned as hopeless in the wake of the Gunpowder Plot, and Elizabeth was married to William Knollys, 1st Earl of Banbury who was some 40 years her senior on 23 Dec 1605. Nevertheless, Edward and Elizabeth seem to have fallen in love, for they were married in Jun 1632 within five weeks of her first husband's death. Officially Edward had no issue, but the two sons borne to Elizabeth, Countess Banbury, were widely supposed to have been Edward's children, rather than the children of William Knollys.
