Robert De ROS of Furfan (Sir Knight)
Born: ABT 1177
Died: BEF 23 Dec 1226/7
Buried: 1227, Temple Church, London, London, England
Notes: Magna Charta Surety, 1215, Knight Templar, was born in 1177. When only 15 years of age he had paid a thousand marks' fine for livery of his lands. In 1197, when aged twenty years and while with the King of Normandy, he was arrested. He was committed to the custody of Hugh de Spiney who allowed him to escape out of the Castle of Bonville. King Richard thereupon hanged de Spiney and collected a fine of twelve hundred marks, about eight hundred pounds, from Ros's guardian as the price of his continued freedom. When John become King, he gave young Ros the whole Barony of his great grandmother's father, Walter d'Espec, as conciliation. ABT the 14th year of King John's reign, Robert assumed the habit of a monk, whereupon the custody of all his lands and Castle Werke, were committed to Phillip d'Ulcote. However, Robert did not continue long as a recluse, as in about a year he was executing the office of high sheriff of county Cumberland. At the beginning of the struggle of the Barons for constitutional government, he at first sided with King John and, in consequence, obtained some valuable grants from the Crown. He was made governor of Carlisle, but was later won over by the Barons. He returned to his allegience in the reign of Henry III and in 1217/8 his manors were restored to him. Although he was a witness to the second Great Charter and the forest Charter of 1224, he seems to have been in favor with the King. Ros erected the Castles of Hemsley, or Hamlake, in Yorkshire, and of Werke, in Northumberland. He was a member of the Order of Knights Templar. He did in 1226/7 and was buried "in his proper habit" in the Knights' Church, or the New Temple in London, where his tomb may be seen.

Notes: M.P. 1261, 1265, summoned to Parliament in 1264 as Baron Ros of Belvoir Castle. In 1258 he was apointed chief commissioner of Herfordshire to inquire into excesses there. In that same year he was summoned for service against the Welsh and the Scots. He sided with Simon de Montfort in 1264/4 and was holding Northampton under the younger Simon when the King took it. He was summoned to Monfort's parliament; but these writs, issued by Simon in the King's name, are no longer regarded as valid for the creation of peerages. In May 1265 Prince Edward (TKing Edward I) escaped from his custody at Hereford to Wigmore Castle, with help of Roger de Mortimer. Robert later surrendered Gloucester Castle to the Prince. After Montfort was slain and his rebellion quashed at the Battle of Eversham Robert received a full pardon at the insistance of Prince Edward. In 1276 he was one of the magnates, who, in council at Westminster, gave judgement against Llewelyn, and was summoned for servive in the consequent campaign. By his marriage he became Lord of Belvoir.

According to Cockayne's "Complete Peerage", he was summoned to parliament regularly 1394-1413. He served on the Privy Councils of both Richard II and Henry IV. He was in Calais in 1396 for the wedding of Richard II to Isabelle, the 8 year old daughter of King Charles VI of France. This marriage was very unpopular with the English nobility and added to their discontent with the King's rule in general. In 1399, while Richard was on an expedition to Ireland, Henry Bolingbroke, the Duke of Lancaster (the future Henry IV), who had been banished by Richard, returned to England with an army to claim the throne for himself. William threw his support to Henry. He was present at the abdication of Richard and assented to his inprisonment (which led to his death shortly thereafter). William was Treasurer of England in 1403 &1404; made a Knight of the Garter in 1404; was one of the auditors of he war accounts in 1406; and in 1413-14 was the King's chief commissioner for the shires of Middlesex, Nottingham, and Derby in the matter of determining the facts relating to rebellions and treasons commited by the Lollards.

Margaret De ROS (B. Borough of Gainsborough)
Born: 1432, Walthamstow, Essex, England
Died: 10 Dec 1488Buried: Gainsborough, co. Lincoln, England
Notes: not a rich heiress and had to wait till the late 1450's for a husband, and when he came she was in her late twenties and he, in his fifties. William, Lord Botreaux of North Cadbury, Somerset, had fought at the great battle of Agincourt in 1415. He was rich and had already been married to Elizabeth Beaumont daughter of Lord Beaumont of Folkingham Castle in Lincolnshire. Williams daughter was ten years older than Margaret and married to Lord Hungerford. As Lady Botreaux, Margaret would have continued to serve Queen Margaret, moving from Westminster to Coventry and observing the dramatic events and early battles of The Wars of The Roses, firstly from the Royal Court and then, as the situation worsened, from the safety of her elderly husbands beautiful manors in Somerset.
The battle of St. Albans saw her much hated
step-father, Duke Edmund killed and her mother a widow once again. 1461 saw the terrible battle of Towton and the coronation of the first
Yorkist King of England, Edward IV. William, Lord Botreaux was
probably ill and infirm, incapable of bearing arms even if he had
wished to at this dangerous time, and he died on 16 May 1462
leaving Margaret as a very wealthy widow indeed, quite a catch for
some lucky fellow. The dowager Lady Botreaux's situation was not
bright, however. Her step-brother's, real brother and step-daughters
entire family were all Lancastrian rebels and traitors, all under act
of Attainder - a sentence of death if caught. Margaret chose to re-marry
to someone she may very well have known, a man who was 'great about
the King', a senior Yorkist officer who had just been dubbed a Knight
at Christmas 1462 -
Sir Thomas Borough of Gainsborough in Lincolnshire
They married in 1463 as Margaret step-brother, Henry, Duke of Somerset had made peace with the Yorkist King, and becoming Captain of the Kings bodyguard... By 1464 Somerset had once again changed sides, going back to the Lancastrians in the North of England, being captured at the battle of Hexham and behaeaded there, probably with Sir Thomas Borough watching. In the late 1480's Lady Margaret became gravely ill, her husband acquiring expensive presecriptions from London Apothcaries in an attempt to make her well and to aleviate the suffering she evidently endured. Sadly, Lady Borough passed away on the 10 Dec 1488, in the company of her family at Gainsborough manor aged just 57 years. Margaret Ros, dowager Lady Botreaux and Lady Borough, was laid to rest in the Borough family vault in Gainsborough parish church, re-built by her husband.

Notes: Anne’s husband was apparently banished from court around 1593 but in 1594 he was knighted by the Earl of Essex after the siege of Rouen. He was involved in both the Bye Plot and the Main Plot and was sentenced to death in 1603. In 1605 he was given a stay of execution and exiled instead. The Markhams were recusants and friends with Father Gerard, but Anne was desperate to obtain a pardon for her husband that she entered into communication with Robert Cecil, E. of Salisbury, intending to betray Father Gerard’s whereabouts to him, as well as the location of other recusants, such as Anne Vaux. Several of the letters they exchanged are reprinted in Godfrey Anstruther’s Vaux of Harrowden. Cecil had been informed that Lady Markham was 'the most pragmatical headed lady in these parts of England'. But Anne failed in her efforts and her husband remained in exile until his death. According to some accounts he was acting all that while as a spy for Salisbury. Anne, meanwhile, remained in England. All of her husband’s properties had been forfeited at the time of his attainder. She lived for a time at Laxton in the Rectory House. In 1618 she resurfaces in the records, charged with committing bigamy with one of her servants. She was obliged to do penance in a white sheet at Paul’s Cross in London. She was also fined £1000. It is unclear how she was expected to lay hands on that kind of money and there is no further record of her that I have been able to find.
