Notes: knighted at Flodden Field in 1513. One of the King's Spears (guards) to Henry VIII. 1529 Member of Parliament. Lord Chamberlain to Queen Anne Boleyn. The Borough family suffered many family problems during Lord Thomas life, including bastardising his eldest sons children, coupled with national events, such as the Pilgrimage of Grace and the reformation, which Thomas found himself heavily involved with. Married Agnes Tyrwhitt in 1496 (another marriage arranged by his astute grand father), and it was Lord Thomas who put the Borough family back on track. Life at Gainsborough, was under an over-bearing father given to violent rages, and the memories of the recently deceased lunatic were prevalent. Thomas ruled his family with an iron hand, requiring absolute obedience. Lord Thomas's second marriage to Alice London, a widow twice over, took him away from both Gainsborough and Starborough castle. Lord Borough lived at Euston Hall near Thetfoe.

Married 2: Alice LONDON (w.1 of Thomas Bedingfield - w.2 of Edmund Rokewood)
Died: 1533
Notes: Catherine’s full dowry had not been paid by 1531, and perhaps this was the reason for the couple remaining in his parents’ home. Eventually, in Oct 1530, Edward was appointed as Steward, in survivorship with his father, of the Manor of Kirton-in-Lindsey, some 15 miles north-east of Gainsborough and took up residence there. He also sat on the various Commissions of the Peace for that county. Edward and Catherine had no children. Dr. James, in her biography of Catherine, suggests that Edward may have been homosexual, but adduces no evidence. Edward died sometime in early 1533 from unknown causes.
Father: Thomas BOROUGH (3° B. Borough of Gainsborough)
Mother: Agnes TYRWHITT (B. Borough of Gainsborough)
Married: Catherine PARR (Queen of England) ABT 1526, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, England
Died: BEF 28 Feb 1550
Notes: Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Owen, is identified as the faithless wife who had children by another person during the marriage. When Elizabeth gave birth to her first child, Margaret, her father-in-law became convinced that she was guilty of adultery and disowned her. Destitute, Elizabeth petitioned Thomas Cromwell for an income. In 1543, matters detriorated further when her father-in-law secured an act of Parliament that declared all three of the children born to Elizabeth during his son’s lifetime to be illegitimate. The summary of this act in "Letters and Papers of the Reign of Henry VIII" vol 18, pt. 1 (1543) p. 46 #66 (London: HMSO, 1901) reads: "That whereas Elizabeth Burgh, late wife of Thomas lord Burgh (sic) lived in adultery during her husband's lifetime, and had children Margaret, Humfrey and Arthur by persons other than her husband, as she has partly confessed, these children are to be taken as bastards". Catherine Parr, who was briefly the wife of Edward, second Lord Borough, or perhaps one of Thomas Borough's daughter-in-laws, paid Elizabeth a pension from her own chamber accounts during her tenure as Queen (1543-1547). Ironically, in his will, Lord Borough left Elizabeth's daughter, Margaret, a legacy of 700 marks, an indication that he might have changed his mind. The 3rd baron Borough was a tyrant who ruled his family with an iron hand. There was also a strain of madness in the Borough family, a fact from which one may infer whatever they choose about the charges against Elizabeth Owen.

Notes: her only child was a considerable heiress, and was betrothed to a son of Sir William Fairfax in 1536, but disputes between the two fathers over the manor of Wigsley in Nottingham and other properties led Bussy to pay Fairfax £450 in 1539 to relinquish his claim to both Agnes and the land. She was then married to Edmund Brudenell of Deene (b. 1521- d. 24 Feb 1585). They were visited there by Queen Elizabeth on her progress of 1566. Agnes and Edmund quarreled over money, Edmund’s unfaithfulness, religion (she was a staunch Protestant; he was sympathetic to Catholic recusants), how long to stay at Deene and how long at Houghham, and (in 1562) over title deeds. As a wife, Agnes had few legal rights. At one point she had to borrow money from her cousin, John Bussy, to pay her dressmaking bill. However, she did apparently have some say in the distribution of Bussy lands after her death and she paid her cousin, Richard Topcliffe (their mothers were sisters and Topcliffe’s sister was married to Brudenell’s brother) an annuity. Because Agnes was childless, there were several cousins with claims on her estate. Early on, Brudenell conspired with John Bussy to defraud the others by taking Agnes to London while another woman pretended to be her in court and surrendered the Bussy lands. The plan was to split the inheritance but Bussy backed out at the last minute. After the death of her second husband, Sir Anthony Neville, Agnes’s mother (Anne) lived with the Brudenells. In the Oct following Anne's death, when Agnes was ailing, Sir Walter Mildmay brokered an agreement for the distribution of the property after Agnes's death. In addition to deciding on her heir, Agnes wished to endow schools. Included was a provision that Brudenell (now Sir Edmund) “banish Kelam’s wife out of his company”. Brudenell, however, had plans of his own. He secretly negotiated a deal with Anthony Mears of Kirton, the principal heir to the seven manors Agnes had brought with her when they married. Two days after Agnes died, Sir Edmund purchased the Bussy inheritance from Mears for an undisclosed amount. This was contested by other Bussy relatives and the lawsuits were still ongoing in 1589, well after Sir Edmund himself had died. At one point he was even accused of giving her “lewd physic” to shorten her life, but there was no basis for this charge. Some three months passed between the date when Sir Edmund was supposed to have poisoned his wife and her death and in the interim she was well enough to have a company of players come to Deene and perform. After Agnes’s death, Sir Edmund remarried, taking as his bride one Audrey Fernley, widow of Anthony Rone of Houndslow. They had one child, a daughter, in 1584. Audrey died soon after she was born. Upon Sir Edmund’s death the following year, the infant inherited an annuity of 100 marks (£55 13s. 4d.) and a marriage portion of £3000.

As duelling was forbidden, negotiations were conducted secretly, concealed from the court.

Thomas BOROUGH (5° B. Borough of Gainsborough)
Born: 1558, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, England
Died: 14 Oct 1597, Newry, Newry, Ireland
Notes: Knight of the Garter. Became a trusted royal servant; soldier, Ambassador, M.A. Oxford, Governor of Brill, Lieutenant of Ireland, and running rapidly out of money. To fund many of these enterprises, which, by rights were his Queen, Lord Thomas had to sell off and mortgage his estates. In 1595 he became indebted to William Bereblock for £3,000, and mortgaged the Lincolnshire estate, including Gainsborough, to him. By the time of his death, in Ireland, in Oct 1597 much of Northumberland, Yorkshire and the Kent/Surrey estates were either sold or mortgaged off. Gainsborough manor and its estate was sold, in 1596, to pay off Bereblock, for £5,200 to William Hickman, a London merchant - and so ended the Burghs long association with Lincolnshire. Died tragically young, serving Queen Elizabeth I as Lord Deputy of Ireland. All this time Lady Frances Borough and the family were living at Starborough castle, trying valiantly to save the finances. The heart rending letters that Lady Frances sent to Elizabeth I, begging for her husbands release from duties, still survive - but to no avail. Elizabeth had Lord Thomas buried, apparently, in St James Chapel, Westminster Abbey. Lady Frances lived on till Jul 1647, living in Westminster after Starborough castle was sold, having arranged marriages for all of the girls. She was buried in St.Margarets Church, Westminster, the same church as her daughter Frances had married Francis Coppinger in 1604. Starborough Castle itself was sold to Richard, Lord Richardson and the Borough families portraits (some full length), letters and heirlooms scattered amongst the four girls families.

Robert BOROUGH (6° B. Borough of Gainsborough)
Born: ABT 1594
Died: 26 Feb 1602/3
Buried: Winchester Cathedral, Hampshire, England
Notes: named after Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, the Queen favourite, was only 3 years old in 1597, and was "in the care" of Thomas Bilson, Bishop of Winchester. Lord Robert died on the 26 Feb 1602/3 after a long illness. He left behind, through no personal fault, a ruined barony and four sisters to inherit it. The barony and the precious little that went with it descended to the girls, Elizabeth, Anne, Frances and Catherine. It was Elizabeth Burghs marriage to a distant relative, George Brooke, that eventually bought the barony to the Leith family by a complicated path of descent.
