NEVILLE FAMILY
The family include the Nevilles of Abergavenny, Wellingore, Auborn, Kewland Hall, Skelbrooke, Chevet, Thorney, Tasburgh Hall and the Nevilles of Raby Castle. Each bore similar Coat of Arms with the Motto "NeVile Velis" meaning "Form no Vile wish or thought."
On the spelling of the surname Neville, the Abergavenny branch reject the final "e", while the Braybroooke branch retain it. For the sake of further distinction, the Grove, Chevet, Holbeck, Skelbrooke and Wellingore baranchs omit one "L". In the old manuscripts, from "De Nova Villa", we get Neuville, Nevylle, Nevyll, Nevyl, Nevill and Nevil while the Latimers are frequently styled Nevell, but the prevailing form is Nevyll or Nevill.

Notes: Nottingham historian Tony Scupham-Bilton has suggested that there is a gay undertone to the Robin Hood legend. The link with Robin Hood dates back 700 years and it is due to the relationship between Sir William Neville and Sir John Clanvowe, a poet who wrote a ballad in honor of a visit of King Richard II to Nottingham castle, "The Jest of Robin Hood". According to Scupham-Bilton, the background of the ballad was Clanvowe's own relationship with Neville. The two of them had a ceremony of "wedded brotherhood". Neville and Clanvowe died on pilgrimage near Constantinople, Neville two days later than Clanvowe. In an entry for 1391 in the chronicle compiled in the XIV century by the monks of Westminster Abbey, it is written that William Neville died of grief for the death of John Clanvowe: "It was also on October 17, that in a village near Constantinopole in Greece the life of Sir John Clanvowe, a distinguished knight, came to its close, causing to his companion on the march, Sir William Neville, for whom his love was no less than for himself, such inconsolable sorrow that he never took food again and two days afterward breathed his last, greatly mourned, in the same village. These two knights were men of high repute among the English, gentlemen of mettle and descended from illustrious families". Their tombstone was sculpted with two helms kissing each others, and was discovered in 1913 inside the Arap Mosque. It is now preserved at the İstanbul Archaeology Museums.

Notes: Son and heir. He was born in 1382, being aged 13 at his mother's death, and attaining his majority by Dec 1403. On 4 Jul 1398 a grant of 100 marks per annum was made to the Bishop of London and Edmund Hampdene for his maintenance during minority. His marriage had already (15 May) been granted to the Bishop, who in 1399 assigned it to Elizabeth, Lady Clifford, and others. On 28 Jul 1400 Henry IV granted to John, lord of Latymer, still under age, custody of the manors of Scampston and Terrington. He was summoned to Parliament from 25 Aug 1404 to 27 Nov 1430, by writs directed Johanni de Latymer or Johanni Latymer chivaler. He was one of the lords who on 22 Dec 1406 sealed the second Act of Succession and swore to support the same; and about that time his name occurs on a list of those summoned to attend a Great Council. He married, before 24 Jul 1406, Maud, daughter of Thomas, 6th Lord Clifford. From her he was divorced casusa frigiditatis ujusdem Johannis Nevill and, having no issue, he settled the greater part of his estate (although derived through his mother) on his brother of the half blood, Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmorland, to the exclusion of his heir, his sister of the whole blood, Elizabeth. He died s.p., 10 Dec 1430, desiring (in his will) to be buried in St. Mary's Abbey, York, "where I have put my stone". His divorced wife Maud married, as 2nd wife, Richard, Earl of Cambridge, who was executed 5 Aug 1415. She died s.p., 26 Aug 1446, and was buried in Roche Abbey, co. York. 1. John NEVILLENotes: Henry was probably a younger son, for the Neville family property at Wymeswold near the border with Nottinghamshire passed to his brother, John. It was through his marriage with Joan Gotham that he acquired a third part of the manor of Prestwold, just a mile away, and property nearby at Cotes, as well as landed holdings across the border at Bunny and Nottingham. The value of his lands in Leicestershire is not recorded, but those in Nottinghamshire gave him an estimated annual income of 6 pounds. Henry and his brother John enlisted in the retinue of Ralph, Lord Bassett of Drayton, for an expedition overseas. Seven years later (1385) they were both with Lord Ros's company in the Royal army which invaded Scotland. Henry would appear to have actively participated in the suppression of the Earls' rebellion of Jan 1400, and before long was made a "King's Knight". In Aug 1402, he and Henry IV's friend, Sir Thomas Rempston, were alone in being instructed to raise an armed force from Leicestershire to march with the King from Shrewsbury into Wales against the rebels under Owen Glendower. Then, on 16 Jul 1403, Neville was among those (including his brother John) commissioned to array the local gentry and with all speed to hasten to the King's side to resist the army led by Sir Henry (Hotspur) Percy, who had raised his banner in insurrection; he almost certainly fought at Shrewsbury five days later, for on the eve of the battle he witnessed the agreement intended to end the differences between the Earl of Stafford and Sir Hugh Shirley, who were both slain on the field.
