CONSTABLE FAMILY
I want to thank Tim Owston, of TIMOTHY OWSTON'S FAMILY HISTORY AND OTHER WEB PAGES, for the research he had done about the Constables of Flamborough and North Cliffe
Born: ABT 1075, England
Notes: The Constables of Flamborough and Everingham descended from Baron Nigell, son of Ivon, who had been given the palatinate and constableship of Chester by William the Conqueror; he was also lord of Flamburgh. His descendants assumed the name de Lacy until one took the name of his office - Constable.

Mother: Beatrix HATCLIFFE (B. Greystocke)
Married: Henry THWAITES of Lund
Notes: in Will of brother's Marmaduke Constable and Robert Constable of Hotham, also in the will of William Grimston, who married her niece. She was the Elizabeth Dryland of Hotham who made a Will on the 28 Nov 1569 which was proved on the 19 Apr 1570 at York. Her mother had made provision for her to become a nun, but she had decided otherwise, a wise decision for someone who was to live through the Dissolution of the monasteries.

Notes: her younger son Thomas inherited Hotham land from uncle Robert Constable and lived until 1590, married and had children, and left a Will.
Father: Robert CONSTABLE of North Cliffe (Sir)
Mother: Beatrix HATCLIFFE (B. Greystocke)
Married: Thomas ROKEBY of Morthem

Notes: No issue. Will 25 May 1564 and proved 23 Mar 1564/5. He named many in his family including Agnes Constable, wife to George Etherington, his great-niece, who it seems he was alienated from over the inheritance of his late great-niece Elizabeth Constable
Father: Robert CONSTABLE of North Cliffe (Sir)
Mother: Beatrix HATCLIFFE (B. Greystocke)

Marmaduke CONSTABLE of North Cliffe

Notes: admitted into the Guild of Corpus Christi in York at the same time as his mother in 1491. His will was made 30 Aug 1523. He married Elizabeth said to be daughter of James Metcalf of Nappa, who later married a man called Wright and was alive in the 1540's when her son James made his Will.
Father: Robert CONSTABLE of North Cliffe (Sir)
Mother: Beatrix HATCLIFFE (B. Greystocke)
Married: Elizabeth METCALFFE (¿dau. James Metcalffe of Nappa and Elizabeth Scrope?)
Children:
2. Robert CONSTABLE
3. Barbara CONSTABLE (m. William Grimston of Cottingham)
Born: BET 1515/8
Died: 1546
Notes: A gentleman farmer, he was granted on the 26 Mar 1539 (30 Hen. VIII) lands at North Cliff, South Cliff and Sancton by Mungo Westerdayll. He had just attained his 21st year. He left an Inquisition Post Mortem dated 38 Hen. VIII, Chancery Series, Vol 74, No 45, Exchequer series 242 No 2 and Court of Wards, Vol 31, No 117. In reports of his involvement in the 'Pilgrimage of Grace' (1536-7) he is referred to as the 'heir of Cliffe' which would make think that he was possibly underage at the time. Although this is not proof in itself it does give me evidence for this to have been the case. James survived the revolt without penalty.

4. James RASING
5. Thomas RASING
6. Barbara RASING
7. Mary RASING
8. Elizabeth RASING?
Notes: in Will of father, and great uncle Robert in 1564. I think that she might have married soon after her uncle's death as she would have inherited more money to make her more attractive for the marriage market.

He shared with his four sons in the glory of Flodden, 1513, being then 71 years of age, his nephew Marmaduke Constable of Cliffe was possibly also there. His distinguished services were acknowledged in an autograph letter to him from Henry VIII. He died in 1518. The death of Sir Marmaduke Constable, as quoted from Memorials of the Wars of the Roses by WEHampton, for the Richard III Soc by Alan Sutton Publishing "A story relates that in his old age, seated in his garden overlooking the sea, he inadvertantly swallowed a frog in a glass of water, wherof he died. His death occurred on Nov. 20, 1518.".

Robert CONSTABLE of Nuneaton (Sir Knight)
Born: 1478, Flamborough, Yorkshire, England
Died: 8 Jun 1537, Beverley Gate, Hull, Yorkshire, England
Notes: in his youth he carried off a ward of
chancery, and tried to marry her to one of his retainers. In the reign of Henry
VII he was of signal service to the crown upon the commotion of
Lord
Audley and the Cornishmen, who marched on London and were defeated at
Blackheath in 1497. Constable was one of the knights bannerets that were
created at Blackheath by the
King after his victory, 17
Jun 1497.
In the following reign he was also at
Flodden.
On the outbreak of the great Yorkshire rising,
known as the Pilgrimage
of Grace, caused by the beginning of the destruction
of monasteries in 1536, he took the leading part, along with Robert
Aske and Lord
Darcy. Constable was among those who made their submission, and
received their pardon. At the beginning of the next year, Jan 1537,
when Sir Francis Bigod rashly attempted to renew the insurrection,
Constable exerted himself to keep the country quiet. When this last
commotion was over, he, like the other leaders, was invited by King
Henry VIII to
proceed to London. This he refused, and at the same time removed for
safety from his usual place of abode to a dwelling thirty miles away.
Hereupon the powerful minister Thomas
Cromwell caused the Duke
of Norfolk to send him up with a
sergeant-at-arms on 8 Mar. He with Aske
and Darcy
was committed to the Tower till they should be tried, and meantime Norfolk
was directed to say in the north that they were imprisoned, not for their
former offences, but for treasons committed since their pardon. What those
treasons were the Duke was conveniently forbidden to say. There was
'no
speciality to be touched or spoken of', but all 'conveyed in a mass
together'. True bills were returned against them, and after their
condemnation it seemed to the King
'not amiss' that some of them should be
remitted to their county for execution, 'as well for example as to see who
would groan'. Constable and Aske were therefore sent down to
Yorkshire, exhibited as traitors in the towns through which they passed,
and Constable was executed at Hull being hanged in chains over Beverley gate at
Hull, and
thereby forfeited Flamborough and 35 other manors in Lincolnshire.

Notes: of Flamborough and Holme, co.. York; the latter he sold in 1633, and the former to Sir Henry Griffith in 1636. For his service under the Earl of Essex (A.D. 1599), in Ireland he received the honor of knighthood; and being involved in the subsequent proceedings of that nobleman, he was arraigned for high treason, but remanded without trial, on a special letter from the Queen, that he and others were unwarily drawn in. On the 20 Mar following, he had her Majesty's warrant, to Sir John Popham, Knt, Lord Chief Justice, to be admitted to bail. Sir William was created a baronet by King James I, 29 Jun 1611, served in parliament, first for the borough of Knaresborough, and afterwards for the county of York, from 25 James I to the time of his decease. He became a great advocate for the liberty of the subject, and being imprisoned on account of ship money, adopted a decided part against the King. He was a colonel in the Parliament army, and his name appears in the warrant for the execution of King Charles. He died during the usurpation, 15 Jun 1655, and thus escaped personally the resentment of the restored monarch, but his lands, &., were especially excepted in the general pardon, granted by Charles II, as likewise, all pains, penalties, and forfeitures, as though the Act of Grace had never passed. He died without surviving issue.
