He received a pardon from Henry VIII, and in 1515 was granted a partial restoration of his land. At the time of his fathers death, Sir Humphrey was only eight years old, but was betrothed to Margaret Fogge, dau. of Sir John. In 1532 he made a settlement of the manor on his further marriage with Joan, widow of William Lane. On his death in 1545 another Humphrey inherited Milton Keynes. This arrangement ended in a quarrel, as Thomas Digby alleged that Richard Woodall had transferred his interests to him rather than his son Thomas. In 1563 the manor retuned to Sir Humphrey. In 1562, before the Court of Requests, he stated that he had beaten his wife (a husband’s right in those days) because she had uttered "many unseemly and quarrelous words". His goal was to reform "her manners and life".

Notes: came to an arrangement with his brother whereby William took the manor of Milton Keynes. On his demise in 1606 his son William, then a minor held the manor. In 1637 William's first son Edward held the manor, dying the following year leaving the manor to his brother Charles; who was succeeded by his younger brother William in 1643. He did not enjoy the profits of the estate. It was mortgaged for £6000 in 1634 to Sir Lewis Watson (who became Lord Rockingham) and John Loddington. Parliament were ignorant of this fact and granted Sir John Corbett the estate in recompense for losses caused by the kings troops. Corbett and Rockingham fought out their case in the Chancery and in 1652 it was referred to Parliament . Corbett pleading the Act of Oblivion. Rockingham died in 1653 and his son Edward Watson and John Loddington joined William Stafford in levying for Milton Manor. Henry Stafford, son of William, was sued whilst a minor in 1669 by Dr. Lewis Atterbury with regard to the glebe lands. In 1667 Henry Stafford conveyed the manor to Heneage Finch and his son Daniel.

Elizabeth Stafford, attributed to William Seger c. 1585 |
Born: 1554
Died: 16 Nov 1612
Notes: educated at Winchester College, where he was admitted in 1564, and New College, Oxford, where he matriculated in 1571. In 1573 he was elected a fellow of New College, but two years later he was deprived of his fellowship for being away without leave. He came to London, where his mother Dorothy was in attendance on Queen Elizabeth. In 1585, William went to France secretly, staying in the lodgings of his brother Sir Edward Stafford, ambassador to France, and spying on his own account. When this was found out, he begged Sir Francis Walsingham's intercession with his mother. He soon returned to England. The following year, William became involved with the plans of Châteauneuf, the French ambassador. By 1587, Châteauneuf was conspiring to poison Queen Elizabeth, using William Stafford's court connections to plant a poisoned gown or saddle for the Queen's use. William confessed the plot to Walsingham, who arrested the conspirators. William was released from the Tower in Aug of 1588 without any charges being brought. It is speculated that William was an agent provocateur for Walsingham in this plot; certainly he suffered no lasting harm from the episode. After this, William retired to a quiet life in the country. His son was another William Stafford, a notable author of 'The Reason of the War, with the Progress and Accidents Thereof, Written by an English Subject' which was published in 1646, arguing for Charles I to give more power to the Parliament.

He received a ransom of 2,500 pounds for a distinguished Spanish prisoner who was captured after the defeat of the Armada and housed with Richard Drake for four-and-a half years until his exchange with an English prisoner in the hands of the Spaniards. The family of Drake of Shardeloes in Buckinghamshire are descendants of this Richard.
