Notes: for the attainder of Charles Neville, 6th Earl of Westmorland, Edmund would have succeeded to the title. Edmund Neville was styled as Lord Neville, erroneously. In 1574 "flying from the persecution of Queen Elizzabeth" he went to Flanders, where he served as an officer under Don Juan of Austria and the Duke of Parma. In 1584 he returned to England, claiming to be the heir to his grand-uncle, the fourth and last Lord Latimer, who had died in 1577. William Cecil's son Thomas, afterwards first earl of Exeter, had married Dorothy, daughter and co-heiress of the last Lord Latimer, and hence was glad to take any opportunity of injuring Edmund. He was suspected from the moment of his return. A merchant named Wright said that he had seen him at Rouen, and that while there he had lodged with the Nortons, who had been implicated in the Northern Rebellion. In Feb 1584/85 he was implicated in Parry's plot. Parry seems to have been in communication with him, and speaks of him as an honourable gentleman of great descent ; he also claims him as a relation, though the connection was slight. Even though he turned Queen's evidence, and was pardoned, he was still imprisoned in the Tower of London for 13 years. Accusations had been made that Edmund was a Catholic conspirator against the Queen. It appears that he may instead have been the odd person out in a love triangle at court. In 1595 he brought a desperate charge of treason against the lieutenant of the Tower. He was soon afterwards liberated, and probably went abroad with his mistress, Francelliana Townshend. He claimed the earldom of Westmorland after the death of Charles, sixth Earl in 1601 ; but his petition was not heard, though he may have been the next heir. On 19 Oct 1603 he was granted a pension of £600. He died intestate and in poverty, still considering himself the seventh Earl of Westmoreland, and his wife considered herself the rightful Lady of Westmoreland. His widow had, probably as a compensation for her husband's claims, a pension of £100 a year from James I. His estate was administered on 13 Jul 1646. Edmund's son Ralph similarly thought of himself as the eighth earl.

Notes: he was an ancestor of the biographer John Aubrey who recorded that she “had Chaucer at her fingers’ ends” and “understood jewels as well as any jeweler” as well as being about to “manage her estate as well as any man”. Elizabeth married Sir John Danvers of Dauntsey, Wiltshire. Their children were Sir Charles, Lucy, Sir Henry, Elizabeth, Eleanor, Anne, Catherine, Mary, John, and Dorothy. In Oct 1595, Charles and Henry were forced to flee the country following the murder of Henry Long, a member of the family with whom the Danvers family had been feuding for some time. In order to facilitate obtaining pardons for them, Elizabeth married Sir Edmund Carey, Queen Elizabeth’s cousin. Shortly thereafter, Sir Charles was allowed to return to England. Sir Henry was pardoned a bit later. In 1601, however, Charles was again in need of a pardon, but this time his crime was conspiring with the Earl of Essex and although his mother offered to pay £10,000 for his release, he was executed for treason.
