Born: ABT 1298
Died: 28 Sep 1355
Notes: Constable of Norham. He obtained a grant of land in Berrington, Northumberland, in 1329, and petitioned the King for Learmouth on account of his own and his father’s services in the Scottish wars in 1331. A curious letter of 1333 from the Bishop of Durham to the council, referring to his jurisdiction over Norham, mentions Manners as constable, and seems to mark an earlier date than 1345, which is usually assigned to his appointment. Manners was a rough border soldier. He was ordered to give up two hostages whom he illegally detained in 1333. In 1340 he was M.P. for Northumberland, and in 1341 he aided Lord Grey of Warke in stopping a raid of the Earl of Sutherland. In 1342 he was allowed to embattle Etal in Northumberland, and thus founded the influence of his family in that district. Etal Castle started out as a three-storey tower house, but its location near the border with Scotland made it vulnerable to attack. In 1341, the owner, Robert Manners, was granted a licence to fortify his home. He created a roughly square courtyard enclosed by curtain walls, with the tower house in one corner and a large gatehouse diagonally opposite and a tower at each of the other corners. The tower house was improved with the addition of another storey and crenellations. A Chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary was founded at Etal in 1345 by Sir Robert Manners. This chapel was situated on the bank of the River Till some quarter-mile downstream of the village. He arranged the truce with David Bruce the same year, and when the Scots invaded England, in alliance with the French, in 1346, he took part in the battle of Neville’s Cross. He seems to have died in 1355, as in that year the custody of Etal was given to the Lethams, who were afterwards, in the interest of the heir, accused of wasting it. Sir Robert’s wives were Margaret and a certain Ada. The pedigree is differently stated, possibily because of the two seats of the family, but it is certain that his heir was John Manners, who was born in 1355. Possibly John was a grandson of Sir Robert.

Notes: Jt. (with cos. Thomas Savage) clerk of Star Chamber in reversion 1604; King’s carver 1604-5. Presumably returned for Grantham through the intervention of his great-uncle, Roger Manners, to whose custody the 5th Earl of Rutland had been committed after his part in the Essex’s rebellion. As his two other brothers, George and Francis, were also in disgrace, Oliver was one of the few possible candidates from the Manners family. He was knighted and given a job by James I but on to Feb 1606 Sir Edward Hoby wrote: '...Sir Oliver Manners is said to have been made privy to these late treasons [Gunpowder Plot], but utterly detesting the fact; and, having a little good nature, though very Popish, being the King’s carver, would not reveal it, but sold his place and went over...'. Manners had in fact been converted to Catholicism by the Jesuit John Gerard, and his departure for the Continent was with the King’s permission. When his intimacy with the conspirators came to light, James ordered Rutland to withhold Manners’s allowance, but in 1608 his licence to travel abroad was renewed. It was rumoured that year that he had become a Jesuit. Finally permitted to return home in 1610, Manners remained abroad, was ordained to the priesthood at Rome, 5 Apr 1611, and returned to England in 1612, probably on hearing of the death of his eldest brother: on 11 Aug Chamberlain reported that Manners had ‘new come out of France’. He spent the last year of his life with his two surviving brothers, dying in London in late Jul or early Aug 1613. He was embalmed at Belvoir, and buried in Bosworth parish church with his ancestors.

13. Dau. FORTESCUE
Roger MANNERS of Whitwell (Sir Knight)
Born: ABT 1575, Haddon Hall, Derbyshire, England Acceded: 2 Jun 1615, Theobalds Died: 17 Jul 1632 Notes: Unmarried. Sheriff, Derbys. 1618-19, j.p. by 1618. When the writs for the new Parliament were issued in Sep 1601, Roger, 5th Earl of Rutland, and two of his brothers were still in disgrace for their part in the abortive Essex rising, so leaving the way open for junior members of the family to be returned for boroughs where Rutland normally had influence. Manners received from his great-uncle and namesake, Roger of Uffington, the manors of Fleet Fitzwaters and Holbeach, Lincolnshire, and, from his father the manor of Whitwell, Derbyshire. He was thus endowed with a sufficient estate to take his place as a country gentleman. In the grant of Richard de Lovetot "of the mill of Manton, &c.," it is added, also, "the whole of Sloswick". This is another hamlet, far distant on the west side of the town, near Welbeck. The name of this place again suggests an early settlement from Daneland, the first residents having transferred to this place a designation from their native country. Nothing is known of the intermediate history of this place till the 27 of Queen Elizabeth, who, among other things, granted it to Roger Manners and his heirs. Roger resided at the Hall at Whitwell, and was buried in the north transept of that church, where his monument still remains, with a quaint, laudatory inscription. Sloswick afterwards became the property of the Dukes of Portland, and was exchanged by them for other property with the Duke of Norfolk. It thus became part of the Worksop Manor estate, with which it passed by purchase to the Duke of Newcastle. He died in 1632, asking to be buried in Whitwell church, with as ‘small funeral pomp as may be, having respect to my birth and calling’. The photos of his tomb at Whitwell church were taken by Wayne Gascoigne, you can see his beautyfull page at www.whitwell.com.
