There was a Jean St. Leger with the King Phillip Augustus in Palestine in 1191. A Jean St. Leger was also a Benedictine and Abbot of St Wandrille in the 14th century. In Aug 1584 Maryborough and Queen's County were committed to his charge. He acquired a reputation for valour and activity. In Jan 1588/9 he visited England to cure a wound which made him lame. While there Queen Elizabeth directed that he should be sworn of the Irish privy council. In 1597 he was sent on a mission to Tyrone, was knighted, and made governor of Leix. On 22 Sep 1599 he was one of the two to whom the government of Munster was entrusted pending the appointment of a president. On 18 Feb 1599-1600 he encountered Hugh Maguire, and a hand-to-hand engagement took place between the commanders which proved fatal to both (Annals of the Four Masters, vi. 2161).

Died: 2 Jul 1642, Cork, Ireland
Notes: took part in "the flight of the Earls" in 1607, when Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone, and Rory O'Donnell, 1st Earl of Tyrconnell, together with more than ninety of their family and followers, the chief of the Gaelic and Catholic resistance in Ireland, fled to Europe. Sir William spent several years abroad. Having received a pardon from King James I and extensive grants of land in Ireland, he was appointed president of Munster by Charles I in 1627. He warmly supported the arbitrary government of Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford, actively assisting in raising and drilling the Irish levies destined for the service of the King against the Parliament. He was a member of the British Parliament from 1634, as MP for the County of Cork. In the great Irish Rebellion of 1641 he bore the chief responsibility for dealing with the insurgents in Munster; but the forces and supplies placed at his disposal were utterly inadequate. He executed martial law in his province with the greatest severity, hanging large numbers of rebels, often without much proof of guilt. He was still struggling with the insurrection when he died at Cork on 2 Jul 1642. William had two wives during his life and 6 children. Sir William's son John was father of Arthur St Leger, created Viscount Doneraile in 1703.

Notes: was induced to give considerable financial support to Sir Walter Raleigh's ill-fated expedition to Guiana in search of El Dorado. The fleet which set sail from Cork Harbour consisted of the Admiral's ship and 13 others. The first ship was the Destiny of 440 tons, 36 pieces of ordnance and 200 men. Raleigh took command and his son was the captain. The second ship was commanded by Captain John Pennington and the third, the Thunder, by Sir Warham St. Leger. It was 150 tons 20 pieces or ordnance, 6 genelemen, 60 soldiers and 10 landsmen. Sir Warham and Raleigh were both ill at Cliana and returned to England. Raleigh ordered Keymiss, a Captain of the Fleet, to sail into Oronoko with five small ships to discover a mine. Keymiss failed to find it and the Fleet dispersed having achieved nothing. On his return to England empty-handed Raleigh was executed to appease the Spaniards and Sir Warham, financilly ruined, was forced to sell Leeds Castle to Sir Richard Smyth. Leeds did not stay in the hands of Sir Richard long before it changed hands again and was sold to Sir Thomas Culpepper (Sir Warham's son-in-law). (Moya Frenz St. Leger, 1986).
