Richard PLANTAGENET (3° D. York)
Born: 21 Sep 1411 Acceded: 19 May 1426 Died: 30 Dec 1460, battle of Wakefield Buried: 30 Jul 1476, Collegiate Church of Fotheringhay, Northampton, England / Pontefract Notes: Knight of the Garter. Protector of England, Earl of March & Ulster, Earl of Cambridge. The first to adopt the surname of Plantagenet. His laying claim to the throne of England led to the War of the Roses. The Complete Peerage v.XIIpII,pp.905-909. Son of Richard, Earl of Cambridge, a noble who had been executed for treason by Henry V of England in 1415, and of Anne Mortimer, who, like her husband, was a direct descendant of Edward III. Richard thus had an excellent claim on the throne of England, which he began to press in 1448 by assuming the long-disused surname of Plantagenet. In doing so, he made a direct challenge to the weak Henry VI. In about 1424, he married Cecily Neville, a descendant of John of Gaunt. Having had the attainder against his father reversed in 1426, he was himself attainted on 20 Nov 1459. This made him all the more determined to achieve the throne for the House of York, and he died fighting the Lancastrians at the Battle of Wakefield on 30 Dec 1460. |

Margaret PLANTAGENET (D. Burgundy)
Born: 3 May 1446, Fotheringhay Castle, Northants, England Died: 28 Nov 1503, Malines, Flanders Buried: Church of the Cordeliers, Malines Notes: her marriage to Charles the Bold at Bruges, Jul 1468, was a dynastic marriage that was long delayed by Charles' enemy, Louis XI of France, who entertained alternate matches for each of the partners with the royal senior line of Valois. Extravagant even by the standards of the most extravagant and cultured European court of its day, the celebrations surrounding the marriage constituted one of the undisputed pinnacles of display in the history of the court of Burgundy. Included in the wedding celebrations was the Tournament of the Golden Tree. The tournament was arranged around an elaborately detailed allegory, designed to honor Margaret. Margaret wore a beautiful coronet (now in the treasury of Aachen Cathedral). trimmed with pearls and decorated with precious stones, and enamelled white roses for York between red, green and white enamelled letters of her name, with gold Cs and Ms, entwined with lovers' knots. The parades, the streets lined with tapestry hung from houses, the feasting, the masques and allegorical entertainments, the jewels, impressed all observers as the marriage of the century. Later, following the deaths of her brothers, Edward IV and Richard III of England, Margaret as Dowager Duchess of Burgundy became a staunch supporter of anyone who challenged Henry VII's hold on the throne of England, including Lambert Simnel and Perkin Warbeck. Although Warbeck was undoubtedly an impostor, Margaret acknowledged him as her nephew, Richard, Duke of York. Father: Richard PLANTAGENET (3° D. York) Mother: Cecily NEVILLE (D. York) Married: Charles "the Bold" (D. Burgundy) (b. 10 Nov 1433 - d. 5 Jan 1477) (son of Phillip III "the good", D. Burgundy and Isabella De Aviz) 3 Jul 1468, Dammes, Flanders |
Margaret of York, Duchess of Burgundy Charles "the Bold", Duke of Burgundy |
George PLANTAGENET (D. Clarence)
Born: 21 Oct 1449, Dublin, Ireland
Died: 18 Feb 1478
Notes: Knight of the Garter. Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland. Third son of Richard, Duke of York and Cecily Neville, and the brother of King Edward IV. He played an important role in the dynastic struggle known as the Wars of the Roses, but is better remembered as the character in William Shakespeare's play Richard III who was drowned in a vat of Malmsey wine.
George was born in Dublin, at a time when his father, having assumed the name Plantagenet to emphasize his descent from Henry II, was beginning to challenge Henry VI for the crown. Following his father's death and the accession of his elder brother, Edward, to the throne, George was created Duke of Clarence in 1461. On 11 Jul 1469, he married Isabel Neville, elder daughter of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick ("Warwick the Kingmaker"). Through her, Clarence would himself inherit the title, Earl of Warwick, following her father's death.
Clarence had actively supported his elder brother's claim to the throne, but, following his marriage, he began to play a dangerous game. When his father-in-law, the Earl of Warwick, became discontented and jealous, and deserted Edward to ally himself with Margaret of Anjou, consort of the deposed King Henry, Clarence joined him in France, taking his pregnant wife, Isabel. She gave birth to their first child (who died shortly afterwards) on 16 Apr 1470, in a ship off Calais. After a short time, Clarence realised that his loyalty to his father-in-law was misplaced, for Warwick proceeded to marry his younger daughter, Anne, to the Prince of Wales, King Henry's heir, and it became evident that he was placing his own interests before those of Clarence and Isabel. There now seemed little chance that he intended to place Clarence on the throne instead of his elder brother; so Clarence changed sides.
Warwick's efforts to return Henry VI to the throne having failed, and Warwick himself having been killed in battle, George was restored to the royal favour, but now saw his main rival as his younger brother, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who had married the widowed Anne Neville. The Neville sisters were heiresses to their mother's considerable estates, and their husbands vied with one another for pride of place, with Richard eventually winning out. Clarence, who had made the mistake of plotting against his brother Edward IV, was imprisoned in the Tower of London and put on trial for treason. Following his conviction, he was "privately executed" at the Tower on 18 Feb 1478, and the tradition grew up that he had been drowned in a butt of Malmsey wine. The tradition may have originated in a joke, based on his reputation as a heavy drinker. However, a butt was equal to two hogsheads - 105 imperial gallons - easily enough to drown in. In fact, it has been speculated that the fumes from an open butt alone would be sufficient to render a man unconscious.
Clarence's wife, Isabel, had died in 1476, and they are buried together at Tewkesbury Abbey in Gloucestershire (traditional). Their surviving children, Margaret and Edward, were cared for by their aunt, Anne Neville, until she died in 1485, when Edward was 10 years old.

Cecily PLANTAGENET (V. Welles)
Born: 20 Mar 1468/9, Westminster Palace, London, England
Died: 24 Aug 1507, Quarr Abbey, Isle of Wight, England
Notes: while her father was King, plans were made for her to marry Prince James of Scotland but the alliance was broken off before Edward’s death. Under Richard III, Cecily spent from Apr 1483 until 1 Mar 1584 in sanctuary at Westminster. King Richard provided her with a dowry of 200 marks per annum in land and arranged her marriage to Ralph Scrope of Upsall (b.1465 - d. 1515), but the marriage was dissolved by order of the new King Henry VII, Cecily’s brother-in-law, in 1486. That same year she carried Prince Arthur to the font at his christening and she carried her sister’s train at her coronation on 25 Nov 1487. In 1488, Cecily was married to Henry VII’s half-uncle, John Welles, Viscount Welles. By Welles she had two daughters, Elizabeth and Anne. Cecily was at her sister’s court during her widowhood but gave up her social position to marry Thomas Kyme of Friskney, Lincolnshire in 1502. She did not have the King’s permission and he seized the Welles lands, in which she had a life interest, by way of punishment. The King’s mother, Margaret Beaufort, however, sheltered the newlyweds and negotiated a compromise the following year. Some sources give Cecily a son, Richard, and a daughter, Margery, by Kyme but more recent research indicates that these were the children of a different Thomas Kyme who was from the Isle of Wight. Cecily’s marriage to Thomas Kyme of Lincolnshire was probably childless.

Mother: Elizabeth WOODVILLE (Queen of England)
Born: ABT 1464, England
Notes: As was typical of that day, British kings often had mistresses, and these women bore them children. However, in that more promiscuous time, these illegitimate children, while not in line for the throne, were known to be descended from the King and were often given titles. It was in this way that Elizabeth, born about 1464, came to be accepted as the daughter of King Edward IV and his mistress Elizabeth Wayte. While there is some confusion about her mother's name, it appears well estabished that Elizabeth Plantagenet was the King's daughter, and that she married Sir Thomas Lumley. Additional evidence of Elizabeth's parentage may be seen in the papal dispensation granted in 1489 for Elizabeth's son, Richard Lumley, to marry Anne Conyers, they being related in the [3rd and] 4th degree of kindred. A dispensation was needed for this marriage, as the two parties were both descended from Ralph Neville, K.G., 1st Earl of Westmorland, and his wife, Joan Beaufort (see Testamenta Eboracensia 3 (Surtees Soc., vol. 45) (1865): 355)].
