The Complete Peerage vol.X,pp.412-414. William Herbert took Mary Fitton as his mistress, and she was soon pregnant. Mary was a couple of years older than he, but she pursued him ardently. She would dress up as a boy to sneak out and meet him. In Feb 1601 Pembroke was sent to the Fleet Prison after admitting paternity but refusing to marry his mistress. Mary Fitton was placed with Lady Margaret Hawkins, the widow of Sir John Hopkins for her confinement. In Mar 1601 she gave birth to a baby boy who died immediately (perhaps from syphilis, which it is believed Pembroke may have suffered from). Both Mary and Pembroke were dismissed from court. Pembroke died of apoplexy. Gave his name to Pembroke College, Oxford was an investor in the Bermuda Company to colonize the Bermuda islands from 1612 onwards, Pembroke Parish, Bermuda is named after him, Chancellor of Oxford University 1617-30, there is a statue of him in the Schools Quadrangle, when Pembroke College, Oxford was founded in 1624 it was named after him. He and his brother Phillip are "the incomparable pair" to whom the First Folio of Shakespeare's Works is dedicated. Father: Henry HERBERT (2º E. Pembroke) Mother: Mary SIDNEY (C.
