Notes: She rejected Sir Francis Bryan’s suggestion that her son marry Jane Seymour, considering the match beneath him. Jane Seymour went on to marry King Henry VIII while William Dormer married Mary Sidney. Jane raised her granddaughter, Jane Dormer, until Jane became a maid of honor to Mary Tudor. After Queen Mary died in 1558, Jane married the count of Feria and left England in Jul 1559, taking her grandmother with her. Lady Dormer accompanied the countess of Feria as far as Mechlin, where the countess gave birth to a son. When she continued on to Spain with her husband, however, Lady Dormer went to Louvain, where she became a leading light in the community of English Catholic exiles. She attempted to return to England only once, to collect her rents, but was forbidden to enter the country by Queen Elizabeth.

Notes: younger son of John Newdigate of Harefield Place, Middlesex, king's sergeant, and Amphelicia, daughter and heiress of John Nevill of Sutton, Lincolnshire. Newdigate came of a landowning family of Harefield (Mdx.), later of Arbury (Warws.). He had many connexions with families in other counties: his mother was a Nevill of Lincolnshire and two of his sisters were to become ancestresses of the Dormers and Stonors, two well-known recusant families of the Elizabethan age. Two other sisters were nuns, of Haliwell and Syon, and two brothers, knights of Malta. He was educated at Cambridge, and on going to Court as page at court and later a gentleman of the privy chamber became and intimate friend of Henry VIII and a privy councillor. He married and had a daughter, named Amphelicia, but his wife dying in 1524, he entered the London Chaterhouse and became a monk there. He signed the Oath of Succession "in as far as the law of God permits", 6 Jun 1534. Arrested on 25 May 1535, for denying the King's supremacy, he was thrown into the Marshalsea prison, where he was kept for fourteen days bound to a pillar, standing upright, with iron rings round his neck, hands, and feet. There he was visited by the King who offered to load him with riches and honours if he would conform. He was then brought before the Council, and sent to the Tower, where Henry visited him again. His trial took place, 11 Jun, and after condemnation he was sent back to the Tower. With him suffered William Exmew and Humphrey Middlemore.

Mother: Amphelicia NEVILLE
Buried: Woodstock, Oxfordshire, England
Notes: her daughter Cecily Chamberlaine was a devout Catholic and married another of that ilk, Sir Francis Stonor (b. 1520 - d. 1564), in 1552. The entire family was involved in hiding priests and turning out Catholic propaganda during the reign of Elizabeth I. Cecily was arrested in Aug 1581 for harboring Father Campion. She had allowed him to set up an illegal printing press at Stonor Park, which is four miles south of Henley-on-Thames and about twenty miles from London. By that time she was a widow. Her younger son, John, was also arrested and upon his release in 1582, he went into exile in the Low Countries. Cecily was allowed to move back into Stonor Lodge in Nov of that year but she was in prison again ten years later, in 1592. Her older son, Sir Francis (b. 1553 - d. 1625) remained in England.

3: Winifred WELLSJohn NEWDIGATE of Arbury and Brackenbury (Sir)
Born: 1570, Arbury, Warwickshire, EnglandBuried
: 12 Apr 1610Notes: married when he was only sixteen and the bride thirteen. They lived at her father’s expense for the next seven years, Anne with her parents and John at Oxford, at least for part of that time. Around 1595, they set up housekeeping at Arbury, Warwickshire. Much of Lady Newdigate’s correspondence with the gentry and nobility of her day has survived. Perhaps due to her connections, she was able to persuade Sir Robert Cecil to grant her the guardianship of her son when her husband died. William Knollys wrote to her of his passion to her sister Mary, and when made godfather to Newdigate's daughter he named the child Mary.
Although she had offers of marriage, Lady Newdigate preferred to handle estate matters herself. She was successful in this, and in arranging good marriages for her children.Father: John NEWDIGATE of Arbury
