PAGET FAMILY
Born: ABT 1476Notes: also known as "Patchett", "Pachett". According to Dugdale, John was born at Wednesbury, Staffordshire, a county where a Pachett family is found in the early 14th century. A wealthy lawyer Thomas Pachett died in 1465 in the adjacent county of Worcestershire, leaving a son John, then under age, who was to be apprenticed as a mercer in London, as well as a brother and a cousin of the same christian name. Between 1515 and 1518 one of the numerous John Pachetts was a suitor in Chancery for lands in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, his claim being one which his grandson was making in vain 40 years later. The fact that John lent small sums of money, a pound or two at a time, to Bromsgrove residents suggests that he was related to the Worcestershire Pachetts.
John Pachett settled in London, where he appears to have been a jack-of-all-trades, being described in 1502 as a barber, in 1511 as a shearman and in 1530 as a clothworker. The Earl of Surrey’s pejorative remarks of 1547 imply that John Pachett also served as a constable or bailiff. Dugdale says that he acted as a serjeant-at-mace to the sheriffs of London, a statement which is confirmed by an acquittance of 1511 in which he is referred to as ‘serjeant of London’. His regular small loans to the inhabitants of Staffordshire and Worcestershire notwithstanding, his means were moderate: the visitation of Staffordshire of 1583 describes him as mediocrae fortunae vir.

Notes: As well as being a member of the King's Household Robert Robotham was fortunate to marry the niece of William Paget, 1st Lord Beaudesert. Grace Paget took Robert Robotham as her husband in Sep 1551, but only after she had married Robert Bull. Bull was presented by William Paget to the living of Whittington in Derbyshire but died by 15 Aug 1551. We can only conjecture why and how Grace was remarried only a month (at most) after her first husband's untimely death. Avaibable records suggest that Robert Robotham had been married previously, his son John, who was to inherit his whole estate and live in Newland Squillers, is recorded as having been christened in 1549. Robert Robotham and Grace Paget had 7 children, of which 3 girls definitely survived childhood and were married well, all of them after Robert's death and thus their matches were made either by John or more probably by Grace their mother who married a third time to Godfrey Fanshawe, brother of the Queen's Remembrancer Thomas Fanshawe.
When her husband Robert died Grace was granted the living of Warwicke Inne during her widowhood. She also received income from Raskell in Yorkshire and Berry Pomeroy in Devon, both properties that Robert had been granted in earlier years by King Edward VI. Raskell was the domain of the Nevilles of Raby, Sir Henry Neville was a beneficiary in Robert's will and one of three overseers of that will along with the Earl of Huntingdon and Sir Walter Mildmay. The 3 noblemen overseers are a clear recognition of the status Robert Robotham has attained by the time of his death. See: http://robathan.blogspot.com/2011/08/robothams-of-st-albans-their.html?m=1

Notes: there is a story that Anne fostered an illegitimate child borne by Lettice Knollys, Countess of Essex, to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, before their marriage. Lettice was a kinswoman of the Lee family through her grandmother, who was married to both a Lee and a Knollys. She was doubtless aware that her husband Sir Henry Lee had taken a mistress, the notorious Anne Vavasour.

Notes: his wife was a gentlewoman of the privy chamber in the 1560s and widow of Sir Thomas Southwell of Woodrising Hall. After they married, Paget dismissed all of his wife’s servants. Gilbert Talbot called him an “evell husband” in a letter in 1573 and Nazaret had formally separated from him in 1581/2. In 1578, Queen Elizabeth visited Woodrising Hall on progress, even though both the Southwells and the Pagets were known recusants. In fact, in 1583, Lord Paget fled England for Paris. He was suspected of complicity, with his brother Charles, in the Throckmorton plot and the Babington plot, and was attainted in 1587. But the peerage was restored in 1604 to his son William, 4th Lord Paget.

Notes: Born in the year of the Massacre of St. Bartholomew, he spent much of his life under suspicion in England because of his father's ardent Roman Catholicism. His father fled to Spain and was considered a traitor. His son turned Protestant and grew to hate all things Spanish but was still mistrusted by Queen Elizabeth, even after serving with Lord Essex in the Calais Expedition of 1596. He avoided the same fate as Essex. He was finally restored to his paternal lands and honors by King James in 1605. In 1612 he became a member of the Virginia Company which then included Bermuda. He was one of the illustrious band of gentlemen "Adventurers" who invested in the Bermuda Company to colonize the Bermuda islands from 1615 onwards. He was the largest shareholder in the original Paget Tribe named after him in 1617, later Paget Parish. He is buried at West Drayton in Middlesex, England.
