In 1189 he confirmed his brother Richard's gifts (Cal. Doc. France, I. no. 563). In 1190 he was lord of 16 knights' fees "in Devon and Cornwall" (Red Book of the Exchequer, p. 607). He was married to Emma de Soligny, named in a IPM of 1302 (CIPM, 4, no. 82) wherein she is called Emma de Sulenny, sister and heiress of Geoffrey de Sulenny (d. 1265/6) and mother of Oliver de Campo Arnulphi. (Although the IPM calls her son Oliver, there is little doubt he is identical with William.)

1. Oliver CHAMPERNOWNERichard CHAMPERNOWNE of Modbury
Born: ABT 1236, Modbury, Devonshire, England
Notes: Modbury origins go back to Saxon times though nowadays most of the houses lining the steep main street are 18th or 19th century formerly the homes of prosperous wool merchants. During the reign of King Stephen of ‘nineteen long winters’, a Priory was founded in Modbury for Benedictines but was dissolved in the time of Henry VI. St. George’s Church, Modbury, is rather unusual for the county of Devon in that it has a Medieval spire. It contains mutilated effigies of the Prideaux family in the north transept. Within the south transept are the Champernowne effigies; it was Sir Richard Champernowne whose family resided at Modbury House, living in great splendour till the end of the seventeenth century. The building was castellated in 1334 by royal license, but all was taken down in 1705 except a small portion which consisted of a stable and hay loft. It is said the family kept a very fine band of singers and musicians in the reign of Queen Elizabeth and several of the family were knighted for military services.

Children:
1. Richard CHAMPERNOWNE of Modbury (Sir)
2. Oliver CHAMPERNOWNEDied: AFT 1340
Notes: Unlike the Modbury and Ilfracombe branches of the family, the Champernownes of North Tawton are a bit more difficult to place. Vivian(p. 160) calls Oliver the son of John Champernowne and grandson of Sir William Champernowne of Ilfracombe, who died in 1305. However, insofar as Sir William's son John was a cleric, it does not seem likely that he was Oliver's father. The 1422/3 IPM of Oliver's grandson, Otho Champernoun, is quite extensive, and being childless, and an only child himself, names a number of relatives as his heirs. Included among several aunts he names a cousin, Alexander, son of Richard Champernowne. It should be remembered that by this time the Champernownes of Ilfracombe had died out long before in their male issue and only the Modbury family was still flourishing. Oliver could be a younger brother of Sir Richard Champernowne of Modbury. He was already an adult by 1332 and was married to Eglina Valletort, a daughter and co-heiress of Hugh de Valletort of North Tawton. Her sister, Elizabeth, was the wife of Sir Richard Champernowne of Modbury. Whereas Richard was not a name that appeared in the Ilfracombe family, it certainly does so in each generation of the Modbury line. As the brother and brother-in-law of a Richard Champernowne, Oliver also named one of his sons Richard. The 1332 Devonshire Lay Subsidy assigns only property in North Tawton to Oliver Champernowne and this came to him through his marriage, thus there appears to be way to connect him to property he may have received from his father. Eglina Valletort survived her husband, as Sir Richard Stapleton held the advowson of the church of North Tawton of Eglina Champernon in Edward III's time (Pole's Devon:427). She was still living in 1346 (Feudal Aids, 1, p. 422).Father: Richard CHAMPERNOWNE of Modbury (Sir) / John CHAMPERNOWNE

Born: ABT 1505, Bere Ferrars,
Devonshire, England Died: 10 Sep 1553 Notes: Protestant wife of the evangelical Henrician courtier, Anthony Denny, noted for her activities in the households of Anne Boleyn and Catherine Parr in the 1530s and 1540s. Sister of Catherine Ashley; when Anne Boleyn became Queen, Anne Herbert (Catherine Parr sister), Joan Guildford and Jane Champernowne became maids of Honour. Initially sponsored by her uncle, Sir Gawen Carew, her own beauty, her accomplishments, and her conversion to the New Religion all contributed to her success. When Henry VIII married Anne of Cleves, Lady Denny was appointed as one of her Ladies-in-waiting. Later, Jane became one of Catherine Parr´s Ladies-in-waiting. In 1537, the Abbey of Waltham Holy Cross was assessed at a gross annual value of £1079 2s. 1d., and was the richest religious house in Essex. It outlasted every other abbey in the country, and was only formally surrendered on 23 Mar 1540, by its last abbot, Robert Fuller, who retired with a pension of £200 and with several manors and church advowsons. The abbey lands were leased to Sir Anthony Denny, and were subsequently purchased outright by Jane in 1549. Lady Denny was one of the female courtiers that Wriothesley, Gardiner, et al were trying to implicate in their interrogations and torture of Anne Askew. Obviously, both Denny and his wife were deeply intwined with the Reformed religion. In 1547, she retired to Cheshunt but her service to the Crown was not yet over. In May 1548, Princess Elizabeth and her household were sent to stay there with the Dennys and remained until autumn. |

Notes: during the reign of Henry VIII, she converted to Protestantism and refused to give up her beliefs when Mary Tudor was queen. She sat with the martyr, Agnes Prest, the night before her execution. She does not, however, seem to have been prosecuted herself. Under Elizabeth Tudor, through the influence of Catherine’s relative, Kate Astley, Catherine’s son Walter was introduced to court and made a success of himself there. Catherine continued to live in the West Country, where she kept liveried servants and a waiting woman, but she was in debt when she died. She made her will on 18 Apr 1594. She was buried in Exeter with her second husband.
