Married 2: Anne PASTON 1602

One of the early leaders of the Puritans, in Feb 1587-8 was committed to the Tower, for opposing in Parliament the Book of Common Prayer.

Notwithstanding this, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1590. He was much in favour with King James I, who made him Sheriff of Oxon in 1603, and created him a baronet (of Hanwell) in 1611, and together with the Queen Anne twice visited him at Hanwell Castle, first on the 20 Aug 1605, and secondly on the 27 Aug 1612. He bore one of the ten bannerols carried by ten baronets at the funeral of Henry, Prince of Wales, 7 Dec 1612.

Sir Anthony Cope represented Banbury in seven parliaments, in Queen Elizabeth's reign, and was member for Oxfordshire in the reign of her successor. He died in Jul 1614.
