Notes: Hugh Manning lived in Saint Mary's Cray, Kent, which is but sex miles north of Cowdham, his ancestral home. The Visitation pedigree of the Manning family has him married to the aunt of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, that is, a daughter of Sir William Brandon. No documentary evidence of this marriage or any relationship can be found. Probably there was some more remote relationship that gave rise to the legend. If true, she would have to have been one of the two Margarets, daughters of Sir William Brandon and Elizabeth Wingfield, and there would have been a royal lineage thru the Wingfields. Hugh and his wife died early and that helps explain the lack of records for them. St. Mary's Cray, with its church dedicated to Saint Mary, lies five miles NNE of Downe, Kent. Within this church lies Hugh Manning and his wife and several more generations of this family. There is a mural monument for one of the Mannings and a fine brass memorial to Richard Manning, and his wife Rachel, he the grandson of Richard, son of Hugh.

Born: BEF 18 Jun 1523, Westhorpe, Suffolk, England
Died: 1 Mar 1534, Southwark, Surrey, England
Notes: created Earl of Lincoln by Henry VIII on 18 Jun 1525 at the age of only two. He was "so young that Sir John Vere was appointed to carry him" during the elaborate ceremony. His father planned a marriage for him with Catherine Willoughby, a peeress in her own right and daughter of Maria de Salinas, who had been one of the Queen's ladies-in-waiting.
Throughout Brandon's life, there was a small but real possibility that he would one day become king of England. At the time of his birth, Mary was Henry VIII's only child, and the king's wife, Catalina of Aragon, was already thirty eight and had little prospect of having any more children. Next in line after the king's children was his sister Margaret Tudor, and her children, but their place in the succession was not secure – Henry would later exclude them by the Second Succession Act (1536), and by his will. Next in line after that came the Duchess of Suffolk and her son Henry Brandon, who during his own lifetime (he died before Henry's son Edward was born), was the only person in the line of succession who had the twin qualifications of being male and English. However, he died at the age of ten or eleven, in Southwark. Brandon's mother predeceased him, and the Duke married Catherine Willoughby himself.

Children:
1. Jane REYNELL (m. Sir William Waller)
Born: 1556 Died: BEF 1608 Notes: sometimes said to be either the niece or the grandniece of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk. She is the subject of one of most appealing miniatures of her husband. Shortly after their marriage, they traveled to France in the entourage of Sir Amyas Paulet, the English ambassador. Hilliard, probably on Queen Elizabeth's orders, entered the service of François, duc d’Alençon. Although her husband may have returned at a later date, Alice was back in London by May 1578, when their first child, Daniel, was baptised. By 1579, the Hilliards lived in a house in Gutter Lane, off Cheapside in London, where Hilliard also had his studio. Hilliard does not seem to have been reliable in money matters. When Alice’s father died, he made no mention of his son-in-law or grandchildren in his will, instead stipulating that the allowance he left to Alice be administered by the Goldsmith’s Company. Although there was an Alice Hillyard buried at St. Margaret's Westminster on May 16, 1611, this was probably not Alice Brandon. Hilliard is known to have had a second wife and records show a Nicholas Hilliard marrying Susan Gysard at St. Mary at Hill on 3 Aug 1608, placing Alice's death before that date. |
