A branch of this line became the Herefordshire Perrots.

Notes: moved family to Haroldston sometime after 1442. Turvey says that he was Knighted sometime between 1442 and 1446, and occupied high office in the earldom for more than twenty years, serving as sheriff and steward of the county. Either he or his son was employed as one of the councillors of Jasper Tudor. Note that although Sir Thomas was said to be in the battle of Mortimer's Cross, 2 Feb 1461, he was already dead, so it had to be his son, Thomas, who appears in the roster. Barnwell says: "To this Sir Thomas, in connexion with Henry Malefant, a commission (14 Nov, 4 Hen. IV) was issued by Sir Francis A’Court to raise certain sums in Carew and other places, and to pay £200 in silver to Owen Glendwr, on condition of a cessation of hostilities. The money was first to be transferred to Stephen Perrot and John Castlemartin. The Henry Malefant here mentioned is probably the nephew of Stephen Malefant, who married Alice Perrot.

Married 2: Joan ARNOLD (dau. of John Arnold) (w. of Llywelyn Warren of Warren)
Born: ABT 1408, Haroldstone, Pembroke, Wales
Notes: her husband Gruffudd ap Nicolas (fl 1425-56), an esquire and a leading figure in the local administration of the principality of South Wales in the middle of the 15th cent. Nothing is known of his early years, but it is said that he was the posthumous son of Nicolas ap Phylip ap Syr Elidir Ddu (one of the knights of the Sepulchre) by his wife Jennett, daughter of Gruffydd ap Llewelyn Foethus. The first authentic record of him is as holder of the office of king's approver for the lordship and new town of Dynevor in 1425. He was sheriff of Carmarthenshire in 1436. With Edmund Beaufort, parts of the lands of Phillip Clement were demised to him in 1437. He was a power to be feared in West Wales in 1438, according to the evidence of Margaret Malefant in a petition to Parliament. He was farmer of the lordship of Dynevor in 1439, and his son John shared the office with him. In that same year we find his son Thomas escheator for Cardiganshire. In 1442-3, he again came to the notice of the authorities in London, when he and the abbot of Whitland were summoned to the metorpolis and the Privy Council ordered the arrest of his son Owen. Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, was his patron, and he received, 24 Jul 1443, the custody of the lordship of Caron and the commote of Pennarth during the minority of Maud, heiress of William Clement. He held session on behalf of Humphrey in the counties of Carmarthen and Cardigan. When the English inhabitants of North Wales towns petitioned Parliament in 1444, against the denization of more Welshmen, he and William Bulkeley were excepted by name. He was placed on a commission to enquire into the felonies committed by David ap Meredith in Aberystwyth 2 Jul 1445. The fall of his patron in 1447 brought him into trouble, and he was imprisoned with other members of Humphrey's retinue. He was soon released and managed to retain the confidence of the court, continuing to act for the Justice of South Wales and, occasionally, for the chamberlain. John De La Bere, bishop of St. Davids, 1447-c. 1460, committed his bishopric to his care, and the Duke of York obtained licence, 13 May 1449, to grant him and the bishop the castle, manor, and town of Narberth. He and his son Thomas were placed on a commission for the defence of the ports of south-west Wales, to muster forces, and erect beacons, 7 Oct 1450. About this time, when he was at the zenith of his power, the Carmarthen eisteddfod was held. The date and details are uncertain - reports vary between 1451 and 1453. Some maintain that it lasted three months at his cost at Dynevor and others state that it lasted a fortnight and that it was held at Carmarthen. It is agreed that Gruffudd ap Nicolas was judge over the poets, and that the chair was awarded to Dafydd ab Edmwnd. It is pretty certain also that the eisteddfod revised the bardic metres and regulated the bardic fraternity. In 1454-5, the castle of Carregcennen was repaired and garrisoned upon his command. On the verge of the Wars of the Roses, he was on good terms with the court of Henry VI, and after the Yorkist victory at St. Albans, 1455, he lost some of his offices. Yet, he appears to have taken offence at the coming of Edmund, Earl of Richmond, to Pembroke, in 1456 if he was the 'Gruffith Suoh' who, with the Earl of Richmond, was reported, 7 Jun 1456, by John Bocking, in a letter to John Paston, to be at war greatly in Wales. However, he and his sons, Thomas and Owen, were granted general pardons on 26 Oct 1456. His name then disappears from the records. Had he been alive on 1 Mar 1459 it is difficult to imagine that his name would have been left out of a commission entrusted to his two sons, Thomas and Owen, with Jasper and Owen Tudor. It is, therefore, impossible to accept the reports that he was mortally wounded either at the battle of Wakefield, 1460, or at Mortimer's Cross, 1461. His praises were sung by Dafydd ab Edmwnd, Hywel ap Dafydd ap Ieuan ap Rhys, Rhys Llwyd ap Rhys ap Rhicert, Gwilym ap Ieuan He, and Lewis Glyn Cothi. It is probable that the englynion attributed to him and Owen Dwnn and Griffith Benrhaw had their origin in the humour of bardic festivities. It is said that he was thrice m: (1) to Mabel, daughter of Meredith ap Henry Dwnn, (2) to a daughter of Sir Thomas Perrot, and (3) to Jane, daughter of Jenkin ap Rhys ap Dafydd of Gilfach-wen. Three of his sons have been named, John who disappears early from the records, Owen, heir of Bryn y Beirdd, and Lewis Glyn Cothi's companion in hiding, and Thomas, who was slain in a skirmish at Pennal, probably during lord Herbert's expedition into North Wles in 1468. He was the father of Sir Rhys ap Thomas (1449-1525). [Dictionary of Welsh Biography p313]Father: Thomas PERROT (Sir Knight)

Sir John Perrot, Lord Deputy of Ireland, was in possession of this property at the time of his attainder. Turvey (1990) thinks is the John who founded the Perrot family in Woodstock.

Apparetly Stokesley ot too friendly with Robert's wife, and the record indicates he had to pay him off with 20 marcs in 1506/7. 1510, Robert becomes instructor of choristers. 1515, made organist; applies for license to study degree of Bachelor of Music; was asked to compose 1 mass and 1 song before proceeding. He must have obtained his degree, as there used to be a window of St. Peter in the East, depicting him with the inscription, "Robertus Perrot, Baccalaureus Musices". 1529, was a proctor of the Guild of St. George in the church of St. Michael, Oxford. 1534, is receiver-general for archdeaconry of Buckingham & receiver of rents for Christchurch, Oxford. Alice Perrot, widow of Robert Perrot, buried by [near] her husband, Sept. 1588. Some sources says that his wife was dau. of William John Gardiner and Helen Tudor, others that her father was Robert Gardiner, by his wife Alice Orpewood. Alice was born in Sunningwell, Berkshire and died in 1588 in Oxford. There are conflicting reports as to her death date, ranging from 1 May to 2 Jul. The last 3 children here do not appear on the register, but Barnwell considers their paternity to be based on "good authority".

Richard PERROT of Sutton Courtney
Died: 1636
Notes: settled in Northleigh, along with the his cousins, sons of his uncle Simon. Simon's family lived up on the Hill, the high-elevation part of town, and were considered gentlemen. Richard's children lived in the lower part of town, and were described as the 'bye blow from Herefordshire" by Anthony Wood. Apparently the two sides of the family ignored each other and denied any relationship. The Hill-living side of the family denied the priviledge of using the family arms (3 pears) to Richard's family, who then had to settle for silver pears. Richard's son James got the right to bear golden pears restored to him in 1664 by Sir Edward Bysshe. Barnwell says of Richard Jr, George and Francis: "Of the three younger brothers, nothing is stated, so it is uncertain whether they left descendants."

Notes: Becomes heir on death of his brother John. Matriculated aged 17 in Jul 1589 at Brasenose College, Oxford, from here he presumably graduated soon after in the early 1590's. Settlement of the first marriage of his wife was on 2 Jul 1611, at which time her properties were conveyed to Robert. Clerk in the Exchequer, early 1620's, which gave him access to records for his genealogical work. Oxford scholar who collaborated with Sir James Perrot in writing a Perrot genealogy. From Barnwell, p 122: "It was against Robert Perrot, his brother Francis, and his son Sir Herbert, that proceedings in the Herald's Court were taken for assuming the usual Perrot coat, they were not entitled thereto. The plaintiff was Thomas Perrot, a merchant of London. ... The plaintiff sets forth that Sir Owen Perrot of Hardleston (Haroldston) had four sons only, and exhibits his own descent from that family, which he proves by the bearings and depositions of divers persons. Now, as all recognized accounts give only two sons to Sir Owen, namely his heir, Thomas, and Robert, reader of Greek to Edward IV (and who appears to have died unmarried), it is not easy to ascertain how the plaintiff proved his descent, without relying on additions Philpot's Stemmata before alluded to, and who do assign two other sons to Sir Owen, namely Richard, described as bailiff of Sandwitch, who died without issue; and John, father of Thomas, of the Brook (now Claymor), who was the father of another Thomas. These additions are thought by Mr. King to be in the same writing as that of the rest of the MS. ... The suit must have taken place prior to 1642, the year that Frances Perrot died; and probably did take place between that year and 1636, when Sir Herbert came into the Haroldston bequest, and, naturally wishing to assume the usual Perrot coat, might have persuaded his father and uncle to do the same. Whatever was the result of the suit, Sir Herbert did ultimately use the disputed arms, as proved by the seal of his will and the monument in Wellington Church. The fact, however, of the claim being disputed confirms the statement that this branch of the Perrots were not related, or could not make out their relationship to the Haroldston family.".

Buried: St. Mary's chapel, HaverfordwestNotes: politician, born at Harroldston in Pembrokeshire in 1571, is stated to have been an illegitimate son of Sir John Perrot by Sybil Jones of Radnorshire. He matriculated from Jesus College, Oxford, as Sir John's second son, on 8 Jul 1586, aged 14, left the university without a degree, entered the Middle Temple in 1590, and, 'afterwards travelling, returned an accomplish'd gentleman'. He settled down upon the estate at Harroldston which had been given him by his father, and seems for a time to have devoted himself to literary composition. In 1596 was printed at Oxford, in quarto, by Joseph Barnes, his exceedingly rare 'Discovery of Discontented Minds, wherein their several sorts and purposes are described, especially such as are gone beyond ye Seas,' which ,was dedicated to the Earl of Essex, and had for its object to 'restrain those dangerous malecontents who, whether as scholars or soldiers, turned fugitives or renegades, and settled in foreign countries, especially under the umbrage of the king of Spain, to negociate conspiracies and invasions' (cf. Oldys, 'Catalogue of Pamphlets in the Harleian Library, Harl. Misc. x. 358). This was followed in 1600 by 'The First Part of the Consideration of Hvmane Condition: wherein is contained the Morall Consideration of a Man's Selfe: as what, who, and what manner of Man he is,' Oxford, 4to. This was to be followed by three parts dealing respectively with the political consideration of things under us, the natural consideration of things about us, and the metaphysical consideration of things above us; none of which, however, appeared. Perrot also drew up 'A Book of the Birth, Education, Life and Death, and singular good Parts of Sir Phillip Sidney,' which Wood appears to have seen in manuscript, and which Oldys ‘earnestly desired to meet with,' but which was evidently never printed. In the meantime Perrot had represented the borough of Haverfordwest in the parliament of1597 -8, and during the progress of James I to London he was in Jul 1603 knighted at the house of Sir William Fleetwood. He sat again for Haverfordwest in the parliament of 1604, and In the ‘Addled parliament' of 1614, when he took a vigorous part in the debates on the impositions, and shared to the full the indignation expressed by the lower house at the speech of Bishop Richard Neile [q. y.], questioning the competence of the commons to deal with this subject. When parliament met again in 1621 it contained few members who were listened to with greater willingness than Perrot, who combined experience with a popular manner of speaking. It was he who on 5 Feb 1621 moved that the house should receive the communion at St. Margaret's, and who, in Jun, moved a declaration in favour of assisting James's children in the Palatinate, which was received by the house with enthusiasm, and declared by Sir Edward Cecil to be an inspiration from heaven, and of more effect ‘than if we had ten thousand soldiers on the march'. Later on, in Nov 1621, he spoke in favour of a war of diversion and attack upon Spain in the Indies. Hitherto he had successfully combined popularity in the house with favour at court, and had specia11y gratified the king by supporting his plan to try Bacon's case before a special commission; but in Dec the warmth of his denunciation of the Spanish marriage, and his insistence upon fresh guarantees against popery, caused him to be numbered among the 'ill-tempered spirits'. He was, in consequence, subjected to an honourable banishment to Ireland, as a member of Sir Dudley Digges's commission for investigating certain grievances in Ireland (Wood; cf. Gardiner, History, iv. 267). In the parliament of 1624 Perrot, as representative for the county of Pembroke, played a less conspicuous part; but in that of 1628, when he again represented Haverfordwest, he made a powerful speech against Laud.
Perrot played a considerable part in his native county. In 1624 he became a lessee of the royal mines in Pembrokeshire, and from about that period he commenced acting as deputy vice-admiral for the Earl of Pembroke. In Aug 1625 he wrote to the government that Turkish pirates were upon the south-west coast, having occupied Lundy for over a fortnight, and made numerous captives in Mounts Bay, Cornwall. From 1626 he acted as the vice-admiral or representative of the admiralty in Pembrokeshire, and wrote frequently to Secretary Conway respecting the predatory habits of the Welsh wreckers, and the urgent necessity of fortifying Milford Haven. He was a member of the Virginia Company, to which he subscribed 37£. 10s. In 1630 he issued his 'Meditations and Prayers on the Lord's Prayer and Ten Commandments,' London, 4to.
